Which is perfectly fine! I've no problem with ECNL existing, or clubs choosing to join that platform. PacNW is an excellent club.

My issue is with the constant drumbeat of "anything that isn't ECNL is rec" and "girls who want to get a good scholarship HAVE to do ECNL, because all the talented players go there, college scouts only look there, and anyone who does otherwise is going to be left behind". It's bollocks, everyone knows it, and the trolls who insist on posting this rubbish here are only making arses of themselves.

You are an arse for not understanding the pecking order in the youth soccer hierarchy. PNW showcase had a handful of coaches, ECNL and GDA both bring in college coaches by the truckload.

And you don't understand the difference between a regional and a national event.

PacNW is a regional event, during the winter break, and attracted the coaches one would expect to a regional event. Starfire isn't big enough to host something much larger.

Showcases put on by ECNL and US Soccer are much bigger events, with many more teams, and correspondingly larger coaching attendance. Likewise for USYS regionals/nationals, all manner of independent tournaments, and the like.

If your daughter is eager to get a college scholarship, and not quite talented enough to be in the doesn't-matter-where-she-plays category, and you can afford the higher travel costs--ECNL can be a good option. Simply being "in the club" will get her team invited to a first-class showcase; no need to win State Cup or be invited to Surf. Whether anyone will pay attention to her and her teammates is another question, but someone will probably be watching and game footage will be available.

But ECNL is neither necessary nor sufficient.

Two losses in two days for GPS. Remember when they used to be good?

I hope they’re still good because they beat our team easily.

Don't confuse college commitment with meaningful scholarships. There's quite a few 10% offers that get played up like full-rides. So when you look at those numbers, ECNL isn't a wise investment.

and some kids play for free after an investment of 40k or more in youth soccer.

And some kids get full rides and the $40k is not only entertaining money spent, but considerderably less than a $180k 4+ year education bill. And then of course all the youth soccer spend vs college support $$ variations in between. Know your kid’s ability and the risk reward with your spend.

This is true. Many just get “books” or a very very small amount but the parents usually just say “Mia got a scholarship to play at ABC University and the rest of us crazy soccer parents just think “full ride”...

“Full ride” usually means tuition covered( athletic/academic). Parents need to fork over room/board, books, fees, all other expenses.

Even under this scenario, there's maybe 2 or 3 girls from Oregon & SW Washington even close to getting 100% tuition.

The top state stars I’ve known only got average of 25-30%. If the dollar numbers were out there to see (not with names), it would be shockingly eye opening. Play the sport for love of the game and focus on academics. Much more merit money to be had.

Full ride is everything. Rare. Full tuition is more common than you might realize with merit and athletic stacking.
