Is this due to the TImbers DA starting in 2012? And taking those type of players out of the club?

Its true the entire u14 to u19 arm of westside has been gutted with the inception of DA in 2012.

The better question is what are the Timbers DA doing so wrong in the last 5 years,(0 pros)/ that Westside was doing so well (developing pros) in the decade prior?

      Any thoughts.

It's the coaching. Westside Metros/Timbers had the experienced coaches who developed players who eventually turned pro. Timbers Academy hires wannabee academy coaches for dirt cheap. Add to it the weak curriculum taught to develop the players, and it adds up to poor player development. Unfortunately, the curriculum trickles down to the RTC/ODP level too. There are definitely better options for player development out there.

Some semblance of truth . . . in terms of curriculum at RTC/ODP - what curriculum? Some of the sessions look like they are made up as they go, while others are good. Just not seeing any evidence of consistency/planning beyond the particular coach.

If you think the coaches at westside are better than the Academy you are drinking way too much Koolaid. ODP/RTC is a joke and needs to be completely restructured.

The Academy currently is run by one of the best Academy Directors in the country and given time you will see results. In the short period of time he has been in charge it has changed from the collection of the top players in Portland training like every other club to an academy that is trained to play like the first team with high expectation at every age and results will start to show in the near future.

Honestly you are nuts. Timbers hired a bunch of inexperienced coaches that wouldn't have been hired as an age-group coordinator at many clubs. That doesn't mean they won't be good; but Timbers did this on the cheap from day one.

Heck the fact that they didn't start a free academy down to u12, instead selling their brand to alliance clubs, reflects a short-term $ focus over long-term development.

Agreed; of course that is true everywhere. The system is a dinosaur.

Guess we will see. This year is not off to a great start.

"currently is run by one of the best Academy Directors in the country" - what, did he just start in January, then?

Why would any clubs even bother with offering DA for U11 and U12 if the club model shrinks up the pyramid? Seems they are only setting kids up to leave their club?

Only a few make it to higher DA but they get swarmed with youngers hoping to make it at u11/u12. Gain so many more than they lose. Similar reason to why they keep lowering the age of RTC to itty bitties.

If the U14 on up DA will be narrowed in club scope to only Timbers.. its obvious what kids will be picked.. the Timbers DA kids. Timbers is notorious for selecting their home grown boot ball style of play. Talented kids are better off staying put at the clubs that only have elite level teams who can showcase them in the HS years.
