Specifically the issue with the weighted ball. Far too often I feel as if the heavier ball lends better touches to poorer technique. It masks bad first touches and mitigates their detriment on the game.

What happens to the same player who returns to playing the outdoor game in the spring and can’t keep hold of the ball when they receive it?

    The more you know
    1. Weight a size 5 soccer ball is actually 10 grams heavier then a futsal ball. Just that the futsal ball is much denser.
    2. The sweet spot on soccer ball is much larger then it is on a futsal ball. Much easier to hit a soccer ball cleanly after playing futsal. Similar principal to juggling tennis balls or a small ball - when you go back to juggling (or manipulating) a full size soccer ball somewhat easier.

One major difference between the two is that the combination of a) a smooth, lower-friction playing surface (especially if hardcourt, less so if turf) and b) no cleats, means rolling the ball under the feet is a major way of manipulating the ball in futsal, one that is far less effective in soccer.

But lots of soccer authorities, in many top footballing nations, consider futsal an important part of the curriculum. But I guess they're all wrong, and it's just a conspiracy so gymnasium operators can make a few extra bucks. Not as though people aren't lining up at the Y to shoot hoops or anything...

Street soccer gave birth to futsal.. The problem is you're comparing other countries that are technically sound in the outdoor game to Americans who are not that's the flawed logic

LOL! No kidding. These foolish overpaid youth coaches think they know something footballing countries don’t. Proof is in the brilliant technical US players.... oh wait.

Nah... it always comes back to DOCs and clubs trying to corner the money... and stupidity.

Wrong. It is a reason for why those countries are technically sound and they will say that. It is also a reason why futsal is growing internationally.... because it helps players develop their touch.

Outdoor is the goal and futsal and indoor hurt your game? Talk about ignorance. Seem to recall reading Urban Meyer talking about how baseball helps football. But what does he know, right.

How many world cups does the USA have? How many international stars that were products of the PDX soccer scene?

Really the last people to ask about how futsal or indoor helps/hurts your outdoor game is ANYONE running a club or claims to produce (or knows how) quality national scene players.

The reality is all these kids are going to need good grades to get into college and get a real job someday.

And if they want to stay involved in a game they enjoy, they'll likely play indoor or futsal.

Wrong. If you have skill you can play indoor, futsal & outdoors just fine. Problem with outdoor and Indoor Soccer is you need to be an elite athlete as well to excel; endurance, dynamic change of pace and explosiveness (refers to the intramuscular system's ability to generate high action velocities. It is critical for quick movements such as sprints and jumps). The most soccer playing countries (not USA) has abundant skill so playing Futsal for the large majority is perfect, no outdoor demands. It's a fall back sport to the big daddy Outdoor Soccer.

American stinks as technicians and Futsal masks the most critical skill we stink at first touch. Skill first, not Futsal first. Jus sayin.

Likely outdoor and indoor Coed Leagues. Futsal is rough on the body as we age and it requires a ton of ability on the ball. Not so in outdoor and indoor recreational soccer.

You are delusional. Good luck with that.

Is it possible that futsal is good for developing soccer in winter months (which is how it got started), but not necessarily better than actually training at soccer?

Sport is super fun and makes lots of sense in a city with cold/wet winters. Kids will play it no matter what. Just wonder if some of the issue here is oversimplifying what makes for example, Brazil amazing at soccer - sure they play futsal, also have a cuture devoted to the sport, great weather, and a butt load of people.

                        Just so it's understood:

"Futsal" started in 1930 when Juan Carlos Ceriani , a PE teacher in Montevideo, Uruguay, created a version of indoor football for recreation in YMCAs for the kids.

Ahh.... we have a fraud coach who blames players for their poor coaching. This guy is one of those “play the big kids!” Kind of coaches.

The FACT is that futsal develops touch and technical proficiency. It also helps with speed of play in tight areas.

The truth is that DOCs see futsal as a threat to their income. Don’t let these frauds fool you.

If the players have poor touch, than it's the fault of a) the players themselves, b) their parents, and c) the coaches at the club they were poached from.

First touch is important--but futsal teaches that, because a) "play into space" simply doesn't work on a pitch that's the size of a basketball court ("proper" futsal courts are a bit bigger, but many futsal games are played on basketball courts, which compresses the space even more), and b) a bad touch is far more likely to go out of bounds or be stolen than in outdoor, where the larger space affords for more margin of error.

Not sure why certain coaches would perceive futsal as a "threat", though.

Classic blame everyone else with no accountability for poor coaching. This is the #1 issue with Oregon soccer.

Not sure what parallel universe you reside in, but nearly every club DOC has their club kids playing Futsal or Indoor Soccer. With paid coaches. So it's actually an income enhancer, genius.

The fact is the FUTSAL BALL covers up your actual first touch, due to the denser ball. Giving many a false sense of their actual ability, just the way it is. Physics. The FUTSAL BALL does in FACT not have anything to do with developing a touch or technical proficiency, it's a mirage or shortcut.

Playing with an Orange will do more than playing with a forgiving FUTSAL BALL.
