Most coaches want players to be as fit as possible. Being fit and being optimally fit are two different things.
But the article says Horan did better on the fitness test than her teammates! The photo someone posted has a caption that tells how Horan is tearing it up on the U20 YNT. Doesn’t sound like her performance was an issue, regardless of weight!

So, you're in favor of fat shaming by coaches then?

        Well said!
Some of you are just too damn sensitive. If my DD ends up looking frumpy, she is gonna have to deal with it. Kids will experience the reality and harshness of life eventually whether you over protect them or not.

        Get over it.

          Wow. "looking dumpy." Ok then.

Just because she was the fittest on the team and performing well, doesn’t mean that she was optimally fit or performing to her full capabilities.

Never said anything about fat shaming. But since you brought it up, the topic of fitness is emphasized a lot in hs-aged teams whether it’s high school, club, or speed and agility training. Wait till you get to college ball or the Pros. Without context of what was said, if said at all, the disinformation campaign against your dd’s former teams and clubs says more about your ax to grind. Sour grapes makes for some sour whine.

No axes here - this wasn't my kid's team. So much fat shaming happens in all sports, to both genders. Eating disorders too, from gymnastics to wrestling, all in the name of "fitness"

Bulldozing, over sensitive parents is an epidemic in sports. If parents and players can’t handle coaches wanting the most out of their players, to develop them to their highest athletic potential, maybe they shouldn’t have their kids play sports on high level teams.

Athletes are pushed in many ways. Parenting plays a large role in how your child is set up to deal with these types of situations. Set your players up for success, mentally and physically. They should know, to be a world class athlete takes work. There will be naysayers along the way. Some may call them a ****ty player, some may call them a fat cow. Nod and smile and do what you know is right. Life is full of choices, you can be defeated or you can acknowledge your circumstances and make a decision to move forward.

A lot of apologizing for poor coaching behavior on this thread.

We all know being a great athlete takes work. We also know that as much as there are wome "oversensitive" parents, there are some "insensitive" coaches who put winning about athletes health and safety, both emotional/mental and physical. Parents excusing bad or abusive coaching behavior is dangerous.

Horan says she had a negative experience with a coach that's now coming to Reign. People have the right to discuss that hire on this board. It's unfortunate how many don't care what Horan has to say -- she's not a bulldozer parent, she's a world class athlete that can't be accused of not working hard. Maybe the coach has evolved on that issue. He'll get here and then we'll see. Time will tell.

No one is apologizing for poor coaching. Two sides to every story.

There are better ways to approach the situation than what Horan allegedly experienced.

If accurate, our young women deserve better.

However, on the other side, I do agree with those that are saying a coach needs to be able to communicate to players, regardless of gender, the opportunity that is in front of a player. In some cases, dropping a few pounds, can have significant impact in both peak performance and injury prevention.

The concern with this coach seems to be that seven years ago, speaking in his second language, he wasn’t tactful in encouraging Lindsay Horan to improve her fitness. Horan continued to play for the guy for four years, and during that time transformed from someone who was seen as a poor man’s version of Abby Wambach who wasn’t particularly mobile and wasn’t good enough for the u20 team into a box to box midfielder who is viewed as one of the top players in the world and is a mainstay of the full USWNT. In the same article that gave rise to this controversy Horan described her fitness level and McD-dominated eating habits at the time of the comments in question as “terrible” and her decision to go to PSG (rather than college) as the best decision she could have made. I’m not sure it would make sense to cancel this guy altogether for a long-ago comment that in 2020 would rightly be seen as an inappropriate way to address fitness issues with the young women on a soccer team; I’m sure Jess Fishlock and Megan Rapinoe won’t be shy in calling him out if he does anything that would be considered out of line.
