Right, but the point is that teams can’t pull out without penalty just because the matchup looks lopsided.

Spain beat Germany not long ago.
So much for the Bundesliga. I ain’t sending my kid to Bayern Munich, only La Liga for him.

The jersey team is a local township team which makes it even more intriguing! So much for ECNL as you say....

Don't most top teams play these showcases just to "showcase" players and not necessarily win the tournament?

That is what it should be for.

of course, but everyone wants to WIN. Its a basic human trait. the desire to WIN is embedded in our dna (weather anyone cares to admit it or not).

HA! why else do you have U13 14 and 15 year old divisions? are any coaches seriously looking at HS Freshman (and younger)?

it's up to the coach and club to make sure players who want to be seen by coaches get sufficient PT. You're not doing your job if you're trying to win a meaningless tournament at the expense of players. College coaches don't care what the scores are - they want to see how a player they've come to see holds up against competition, what kind of competition and the quality of teammates you've been playing with.

D's team took that approach. Unfortunately, year after year of 1-1-1 results or worse at top tournaments kept getting her team placed in lower brackets the following years by the time they made it to U16. Not saying the coach should have played to win more, but playing for development and showcasing instead of winning has a downside.
