With respect to the mens game (women's leagues (unfortunately) a different story) I think it likely there will be more players turning pro in the next few years (assuming that the US economy doesn't fall off a cliff) - with MLS expanding to mid-20's of teams and NASL surviving and starting to grow there will certainly be some more pro roster spots open - and with a new MLS CBA in place maybe journeymen domestic players will find a living wage....
The developing links between MLS and (third-division) USLPro (teams like Galaxy II and loan agreements like Revs->Rhinos) and (fourth-division) USL/PDL (Academy/HomegrownPlayer affiliations like Revs->Rams) as well as similar linkages between NASL and NPSL should help create a more viable soccer career path for college players.
One of the issues facing soccer in the US is the fact that the US Soccer Pyramid is more of a cylinder - hopefully NCAA will do what it can to help address this, and working a 10month college season might be a good start...Comment

Pretty clear that this is not a serious discussion about D1 meshing with profession soccer but rather just another weak ego boost for our least favorite D3 champion. Just think, he's putting all of this work in just to prove that his son was really and truly a college soccer player who made the best possible decision by going the D3 route. His kid probably did what the rest of us did when we went to Europe back in the day. Go to Amsterdam to smoke dope and party with the ladies from the windows. This discussion has next to nothing to do with serious college soccer though.Comment

Take that, P. Your kid might as well have gone to MCLA--supplemented, if he's suitably ambitious, by a few community college courses.
