I'd think pcu would be bigger rivals for United PDX than Westside, unless nobody can play soccer east of the river...

Except that if FCP and CU had their "A" teams in State Cup, Eugene probably wouldn't have any teams left at this point.

Wait two more weeks before boasting.

Better to have one team be the bride, than six teams who are bridesmaids or flower girls.

State cup beyond U13G is pointless when ECNL and DA teams don’t compete. I liken it to having high school playoffs for the JV squads.

BLah blah blah. Over the years Eugene has consistently had a few excellent teams. That's impressive for it's size, players available, one club. There is no reason to bag on little Eugene. They're doing a great job year after year.

Except that if ECNL and GDA didn’t exist and Eugene hadn’t lost players to both, maybe they would be in the exact same spot they are right now. Don’t hate on a club that has some success being so geographically isolated. Eugene isn’t a small town but it’s not like they are pulling premier players from other clubs year after year. Although maybe that’s an advantage because they largely escape the toxic club hoppers that plague Portland clubs.

A couple of years back FC Portland put their 2001 ECNL team in oysa and state cup. Results weren’t pretty. Fourth place finish in league and knocked out of state cup.

The ecnl teams wouldn’t move the needle much on State cup.

I think it might be better to have 6 good teams than only 1 great team. Means the club is doing better overall. Eugene does have the advantage of rarely having to deal with players being poached by competitors.

Would you rather be CFC with one super team and the rest losing by ugly margins like 0-14? Or Eugene with 7 teams in the semi or quarterfinals? Which is better for the long term health of your club?

Under no circumstances would I ever want to be Eugene.

The ECNL teams in Oregon are not that great but they aren't terrible either. I am sure they would be somewhat competitive at some age levels.

I wouldn’t let my kid near CFC. That club has been mismanaged so poorly on the girls side, starting with letting the Salem superstar and her friends dictate team placement (keeping the 01/02 team together after the birth year shift), only to see all three of them bounce to thorns academy. This resulted in Salem losing an entire birth year worth of teams (02). They further compounded the problem by poaching every strong 01 from the 00 team, leaving that team a laughingstock. Now they have exactly one good (great) team on the girls side. That team will cruise to Hawaii and lose 3 games in 3 days. Those families will continue to be happy with their club experience, but that team is done in two years and the cupboard is flat bare once they are gone. Every decent player in other years has left or will be leaving. Meanwhile, their little sisters down south are building a multi year dynasty. Their 01 team won’t win state cup, and won’t ever beat CFC’s 01’s, but the next 6 years after will compete and in many cases win state cups for years to come.

Are there really kids from Eugene driving to Portland to train with the thorns? That's serious commitment. About four hours each way three times a week is close to 50 hours a month in the car. Good for them if they want to do that but it sounds harsh.
