What would be the mother's intent to grossly underestimate the age even before she had any idea about his talent? Why does he look 7 or 8 when he supposedly was 7 or 8? Why did he look 14 when he supposedly was 14? You didn't see the DC United players treating him like he was really 17 or 18. They interacted with him like he was 14.

I think it is the best explanation for the current state of his career. I think it is not possible to prove it but still the best explanation.

Please think before you post.
you need wake up. faking of age/BC's in youth sports is rampant. Adu is the classic example of this issue.

You and Cujo are ignoring the data. You're generalizing about something you say is rampant to the specific. You're making a simple logical error. If he LOOKED 17 when he was 13 that would be different. He wasn't 6'2, 185 lbs at 13 or 14. He looked and acted his alleged age.

As for the explanation about his career, that has been answered. There are many white kids who physically peak early and dominate and then fade. Not that unusual. And he is still playing soccer. He's just quite as good as everyone hoped he would be.

BS. The practice is rampant where he originally immigrated from. Chances are extremely high that he is at leeast 3 -4 years older than he states. In fact, he may not even really know how old he is.

Let's think like detectives here: Motives, Means/Method, Opportunity

            1) Motive - Fame & $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, 'nuff said
            2) Means - Lax birth documentation and passport documentation in native country
            3) Opportunity - Leagues are nearly completely ambivalent to checking birth dates

Actually, you are ignoring the data. He appears to have been academically and physically precocious at 13 and 14. He was at his full adult height and weight a that age. If he actually was his reported birth date age, (and if you haven't read the articles lying about age is a BIG problem with African youth teams) then he certainly was an early bloomer and a good example why we should be paying attention to the physiologists who have been saying for decades that the late bloomer is actually the athlete most likely to rise to the highest levels of their sports. In many European professional clubs he would have been tested. Maybe that's why he went the MLS route.

Who really cares where Freddie is? Just another in the long list of overrated US Men's soccer players.

EJ among them. Maybe even Altidore. Our coaches can recognize athleticism. They can't recognize a soccer brain maybe because they lack one themself.

Not as long as the list of overrated European Premier players whose primary skill is 80 yard clears, diving & writhing, viscious take downs from behind.

This is because many teams use overage payers. After FIFA introduced bone-scans this season, fifteen Nigerian players were booted from the U-17 squad, for being too old."

FIFTEEN players got booted. That number is staggering and makes Cujo's point. What else could explain the wunderkid letting everyone else "his age" catch up to him??
                          Yeah, this.

Also, I played with Freddy when he was "11" and I distinctly remember being surprised by and skeptical of his physical maturity... despite playing up 3-4 years he was giving up nothing physically and anybody who claims otherwise is full of it. I wouldn't be surprised to learn his true age is closer to 24.

The US has NEVER managed to produce a field player that was on par with an average European premier player.

To that I say, Duane Allman was 10 times the guitar player Clapton ever was. But no English music fan would admit that even today. It is really no different than Don Cherry's disdain for European hockey players. He will tell you that Crosby is better than Ovechkin.
