    Female coaches

Curious to see Reign is trying to stake their claim on having the most female coaches...which obviously they have zero claim to at all until maybe next season. Their DA teams are coached by men. Their pro team is coached by men. Theresa Predmore is not a coach, nor is Annie. All their women coaches have yet to coach for them, and are mostly slated to coach PSPL teams, not their DA teams. But where do other clubs stand in terms of female coaches? This is what I found on club websites for 2019-2020 - looks like Pac is the club with the most female coaches of the clubs I looked at, and their women coaches are coaching top teams.

Misleading stats. PSPL teams are Reign’s top teams in lower age groups.

Great data point to start with. Can you post the total number of coaches to get a percent comparison. For example Eastside shows 3 coaches out of X number which would probably be a really low percent vs Pac with 10 female coaches vs the Reign with 6 female coaches out of how many total coaches. Also it would be helpful to list females in leadership positions such as club president/technical director etc. Otherwise it may come across that you are using a one sided equation to try to make a point that you want to prove against the Reign.

        Female Coaches

ISC Gunners are 40% female coaches. 10 male, 4 female. All coaches are full time employees. The female coaches are very experienced and coach the top female teams. ISC Gunners are known for the quality of their female teams. ISC Gunners is the top team or among the top teams in the PSPL. With Reign FC coming into the PSPL, they will surely compete for that status sooner than later. ISC Girls A teams can play with and beat ANY RCL A team (ECNL) on any given day. If you are looking for a quality female coach for your kid, Macy Jo Harrison or Erin Vaughn are hard to beat at ISC. That said, many female coaches on this list I know and are very good as well. Definitely research and meet the coach prior to getting on the team if you can.

Definitely agree with the ISC Gunners comment. My daughter plays for the Gunners. Erin and and Macy Joe are some of the best female coaches.

In the real business world, their are plenty of businesses that list female ownership/leadership, but are run by men.

This is done so the business gets extra consideration and or benefit in winning contact.

This is very common when you see women owned construction companies.

Malia Arrant is the girl's DOC for Pac. How many DOCs are female in the USA?
A licensed and former UW standout. You want an ferocious advocate for girl
soccer? She is the one. Reign? Learn how to walk before claiming you can run.

Malia is one of the best. Pac actually is able to get the most out of the players that they get.

What age group can they compete? Our 04 team beat the gunners 5-0 and 8-0 in summer tournaments. Every summer we see Issaquah get dominated in tournaments by rcl A teams. Fury seems to have stronger teams.

Just for clarity, if there are 10 Male and 4 female coaches then 28% of the overall coaching staff are female. 14 total, 4 of which are female = 28.5%

According to the Reign website (not including directors or admin staff)

                    6 out of 11 coaches are female = 54%

PACNW - 42 coaches (rough guesstimate based on actual vs projected teams, give it take 1 or 2) 10 female = 24%

Not an indicator of quality of course but if people are going to use statistics to bolster a particular position, it's always good to have them correct and placed into context.

4/14 coaches is 28.6%, not 40%. But that is just math, not my point. I have a daughter formerly coached by a male DOC, B licensed, experienced, winning record, youth girls soccer coach and a female, high level player, former winning community college, A licensed coach. And I am here to tell you gender is lower on the consideration list. I mistakenly thought it was higher as my daughter had only had male coaches, before she had a female coach. Man was I wrong. Not that the male or female coach both weren’t great, but there was very clear evidence to me that bonding between coach and player had much more to do with their individual personalities off the field aligning and the coach’s style, then it had to do with gender. I am somewhat educated and advocate for equal pay between genders, and frankly I should have known better. I know some people may argue gender matters, but that is not true in my opinion for everything, in fact, for most things in life, if you cast your perceptions aside, gender simply is not a determining a factor for performance. The Reign or anyone else can “hang their hat” on female empowerment, but IMHO, this just further misdirects focus on what really should be touted as priorities of a good coach- player retention percentages for club and for team should be numero uno. Parents a skids are very hesitant to leave a good coach “fit”. Personal testimonials of players and parents. Pay for and post, outside/non-affiliated, non-biased coaching assessments- strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for that coach. Maybe all this hurts short term, but having a coaching club vision (!!) and setting coaching expectations high is smart business and parents should seek this out. High expectations with transparency to the families serviced, will ring authentic over time, will be valued and trusted, and ultimately “win” that club more business.

I think gender does matter, if only for girls to have role models for being a top athlete. It's not the ONLY consideration, and of course I will choose personality/experience/fit over gender any day. But at the end of the day, if a club is not employing women to coach and they are training female athletes, something is off in how they respect and value the opposite gender.

Also, Gunners left a female coach on their website they won't be employing for 2019/2020, so that their female stats looked better. It's actually 3 out of 14, or 21% They claim to have high % female coaches, but the numbers aren't there.

                          A related question:

How often do women coach boys' teams, particularly outside of rec (where it is probably someone's mom)? Especially older boys?

It seems to be a truism throughout sports. Girls and women may be coached by men or women. Boys and men, it seems, are ONLY ever coached by men.

Any counter-examples in premier-level youth soccer?

Seattle United Shoreline BU16 has a female coach. They won Founders Cup this year and have been at the top of NPSL for years.

Maple Valley Rapids used to have a female coach that coached several very successful boys teams in the PSPL -- maybe up to about U13 or 14 age group? I think she retired from coaching recently.

So it's not common, but it does sometimes happen.

Coming from a 20 year parent of Club/ECNL players. My last one is in the final throes of the ECNL program.

Male/Female and coaching license don't mean a whole hell of a lot in my book. My kids have all had great male and female coaches. AND they've had terrible male and female coaches. They've had brilliant coaching from "D" licensed coaches and terrible coaching from "A" licensed coaches.

Point is that, in my opinion, there's no real point to this thread.

Good coaching is good coaching whether they be male, female, "D", or "A".

Find a good coach and stick with them as long as you're able.
