Ignoring the ECNL vs DA politics, and concerns about female empowerment, the crux of the matter is:

      * Reign FC appears to engage in recruiting. To us down here this is no big deal, but Washington Youth Soccer essentially bans recruiting.

(From the RCL rules http://www.washingtonyouthsoccer.org...UUape/aTUCdrY= : "In addition to those stated bylaws, rules and policies, adult members of the Regional Clubs shall abide by
      the following:
      1. Will not recruit players – the definition of “recruit” for purposes of this league shall be:
Approaching a player who is registered to and actively playing for another team within
Washington Youth Soccer, and asking them to either try-out or play for any other team, without
first receiving prior written permission from the players’ current Club Director of Coaching –
even for purposes of guest play (email is considered acceptable written permission). The only
"open period" is the week between the US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships and
the start of tryouts for their gender/age group. During this week only, players are allowed to
attend other teams’ training sessions without approval from their current Club Director of
Coaching. Players must initiate interest and the coach should have an email thread from the
players (or parents) expressing their interest. They must have this prior to a player coming to
practice. If a player/parent calls the coach, they can talk and agree to them joining a training
session, but must email them as well. Players cannot be offered spots at the practices, though
relative levels of interest from both parties may be expressed. These open training sessions
cannot be advertised. There can only be two practices per team.")

Reign is not affiliated with WYS/USYSA (they instead directly register with US Soccer, and also with US Club) and so are not bound by those rules, but WYS has apparently demanded that Reign follow them nonetheless, and refrain from approaching players at WYS clubs.

      * Reign alleges that various WYS/RCL/ECNL clubs have engaged in inappropriate behavior in return--spreading FUD about Reign, GDA, and NWSL, threatening players with expulsion should they attend a Reign practice or ID camp, etc.

      Interesting...

WYS is controversial, but at least they have the cajones to call a spade a spade.

Thorns and Reign are just another version of pay-to-play. They should play by the same rules as everyone else.

OYSA is making progress, but they are still too beholden to Peregrine. Its to the detriment of the game in this state.

That is like an FC Portland player going to a Westside practice mid season.

Not sure why the Reign would think the other clubs would support that.

Here is a better real world example that takes place right here in Oregon every year.

It is like the Timbers and Thorns RTC programs which are simply funnels those DA programs use to steal players from the local clubs which actually support their local communities. The parents even pay the Timbers and Thorns to do this so those RTC programs actually get paid to recruit players away from their local clubs.

And since the Timbers and Thorns oversee the entire state youth soccer landscape they can do whatever they want since they make the rules.

Talk about a messed up system.

Did you even read the letter? I encourage you, and everyone else, to read the entire letter. The Reign, much like the Thorns, are fighting off a constant and concerted effort by WYS and ECNL clubs to misinform and intimidate players to keep them from considering playing for the Reign. And now the WYSA and ECNL clubs are whining because the Reign are poaching players against WYS rules. The thing is: 1) Reign are not a member of WYS so they are not bound by their rules and 2) the ECNL clubs poach all the time. As the letter points, the market place rules apply.

So, what “rules” are you asking the Reign to follow like “everyone else”?

At least WYS is making some effort to serve their members. The fired a coach because of appearance of conflicts: couldn't serve the state and Reign simultaneously.

Our state organization? Still beholden to Peregrine. RTC has turned into non-stop Thorns infomercial.

In terms of rules - when you are pay-to-play (which both Thorns and Reign are) some basic code of conduct as to how you interact with other clubs would be nice. Even higher expectations for Thorns/Peregrine are a service provider to OYSA.

                  1. Ecnl clubs in Portland misinform as a staple of the diet to their members even before the da

                  2. Thorns and reign are crying because they jumped into a competitive landscape and didn’t expect to have to compete on and off the field.

If I was wYS I’d tell Reign to shove it up their ass.

Exactly! SU is simply saying I am not going to support the Reign.

For instance, in his email of May 4, 2019, Seattle United coach Rich Reece made the following statement when replying to WYS and a group of RCL coaches and administrators:

“At some stage do we recommend our members don’t support their pro team until they show they are a club that wants to work in the community and work alongside other clubs in Washington to better the youth landscape.”

Subsequent to this suggestion from Mr. Reece, Paul Bayly forwarded a note to from Terry Fisher to its member clubs that stated:

“Good afternoon. Earlier today I instructed staff to remove all reference to Reign FC from our website. No logo, no ticket sales, no promotion. This suspension shall remain in effect until further notice.”

It looks to me like the Reign are the one's whining. If they are not a member of WYS then why are they expecting the WYS continue to support them?? You can't have it both ways. Not be a member so you are not bound by their rules, but then expect these clubs to work along side you so you can go poach their players.

Good for WYS for standing up to the Reign.

Thorns and Reign came in like a bunch of arrogant *****s and now they are complaining that no one is on their knees and both programs are suffering.

                            Here's the thing.

The existence of pro academies is a relatively new thing in the youth soccer landscape. Some clubs and directors are OK with it--others view them as a threat to their clubs, for various reasons. Some clubs recognize that a TRUE pro academy (one that offers compensated training and a professional environment) isn't really "competition" but something else entirely; others seem to think that pro academies should be held to the same rules and regulations as nonprofit amateur youth clubs.

And of course, some pro academies are "academies" in name only.

The Timbers are a true academy, albeit barely. They offer mostly free training to elite players, and for a pay-to-play club to whine about a pro team "poaching" its players is obnoxious. Once the season ends, they're not yours--and one could argue that no player EVER "belongs" to a pay-to-play club; the dollars flow in the wrong direction for that to happen.

Thorns, at this point, are an academy-in-name-only. As long as families bear the brunt of the costs, it's essentially a pay-to-play club.

My understanding is that a similar situation applies north of the Columbia--the Sounders academy is one of the better ones in MLS (and local clubs STILL whine about it), but Reign FC (which is separate from the Sounders, not a sister team like the Thorns are to the Timbers) does charge more.

Of course, Reign doesn't compete in WYS leagues, so there's really no reason for it to adhere to WYS rules, other than playing nice.

But neither side seems to think there's a reason to play nice--unfortunately the whole ECNL vs GDA business is involved here, and any club affiliated with ECNL is generally expected to not cooperate with any GDA program. So even if no local politics were involved, the well is probably poisoned for that reason.

The thing is, these pro academies are run by the same sh!tty coaches you find in clubs. It’s no different and they think they are now a better pathway for players because they are PROS.... LOL! It’s a joke!
