One of the best precursors of how much playing time you will likely get is during tryouts. If you are one of the last players to be given an offer to make a team, that should tell you right away where you stand with the coach. Coaches will fill their teams, especially the older ages, by the best players based on positions. Once 1-11 is figured out, s/he will fill in with the next best players 12-16. If you are player 16 plus, you are essentially paying and agreeing to training fees and helping fund the club's pockets. You see this a lot in HS soccer between Varsity and JV. Some varsity players get zero to little playing time and quit soccer because of this. Had they stayed on JV, they would have probably played a lot of minutes. The same is true for college ball.

A roster of 25 is not expected to play. Nor should they.
We are talking about youth development, not college.

Even DA teams that are supposed to be all about development carry that many and bring up players frequently. I agree it's hard to avoid big rosters, but if you know your kid's abilities and fit you can largely avoid the issue.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostAgreed. If you are player 18-25, definitely disassociate yourself from that club ASAP. You were snookered. You are paying the same amount as players 1-17, but you aren't getting the same $/minute.
Any club that rolls a roster out there are nothing but scheisters.

Again, even the top players should be upset that they are playing with such low level players.

CB is not a position you can afford to hide kids.
On the issue of large rosters, there is no hell like driving 90 minutes to a field in East BF and only having 10 players. Be careful what you wish for with small rosters.

You can always walk away from money grubbing clubs, but most likely there's always another check-writing family right behind you. Until the # of those saying enough is enough grows to a decent scale it won't stop. In the better leagues and clubs families would rather take the chance and stay. Not always the best decision, but that's why it continues.

If come fall you find out the roster is too big either demand a refund (and go elsewhere) or demand a discount (hey, they'll probably laugh at you, but why not? You're the paying customer and if you feel you're not getting you're $ worth a discount should be in order right?).
