    Did Something Happen at OYSA?

Trying to figure out what set off this series of threads on Timbers relationship.

Was it 1 simple post "I don't like the fact that Peregrine uses OYSA profits to support Thorns Academy, but at least they are partially subsidizing" or was it something else recently? The 1 post seemed to setoff a bunch of anti-Peregrine posts and corresponding responses from the other side of the argument.

Did something change at OYSA or is it business as usual?

Crying coaches at CU & FC who are on the US Club planes & trains to nowhere, come tryout time each May they have to convince families to consider spending around 10K + annually and don't like the fact there is a higher tiered DA headquartered with the NWSL franchise that subsidizes it's program unlike their own clubs. Makes the sell a bit tougher for them, same ole, Same ole.

Yes it's time of year again for them to kick the innocent dog (OYSA) for their own frustrations and shortcomings. Never changes with this lot. Do as I say, not as I do.

Also, in the background the OYSA has also grown a small pair and is not giving into for profit soccer 'training' groups' as member clubs in the OYSA.

      Nothing happened at OYSA

      Nothing happened at OYSA.

Anyone or group could form a league under the OYSA umbrella as long as the clubs meet the criteria. If you look closer at OYSA they sanction other leagues other than the Portland Timbers / Thorns.

        This argument is nothing new.

OYSA hires Peregrine to run its leagues and cups. Peregrine makes a small profit off this activity. And Peregrine operates a partially-subsidized girls academy, which competes with a couple of the local rich-grrrl travel teams for players and mindshare (though not on the field). Thus, a few honks from the affected clubs like to piss and moan about the great injustice that money that passes through their coffers might be ultimately spent on an academy program that they regard as competition.

And this sort of argument plays out in many other parts of the academy, where MLS (or less often NWSL) academies have sprung up, and have "stolen" players from the local amateur club scene, producing all sorts of indignation from said amateur clubs about how mean these pro academies are. Meanwhile anyone who knows anything about worldwide soccer is laughing their heads off, when they are not utterly stunned by the transparently shameless argument from pay-to-play clubs, that it's unfair that pro teams are giving away for free what they charge thousands of dollars for.

It's kind of like Verizon whining about municipal broadband. Their gravy train is being derailed, and they don't like it one itty bit.

Doubtful. Judging by the Thorns tryouts this year, there would be no reason for CU and FC to complain about having their players stolen since none of their players were actually stolen for the Thorns academy. If you want to point that finger, it should probably point at the OYSA clubs who pay the OYSA registration fees and get a piss poor league in return. And even in that context, Thorns only took their "B" team players so ...

Wrong again. These clown coaches cry about the NWSL Thorns Academy inviting players to their subsidized (DA) development Academy. It's truly a comical and telling whine, which is consistent with their myopia and delusion. Par for the course.

League fees and state cup fees are paid to the Portland Timbers and Thorns. OYSA is a sanctioning body. I don't think this is really about the BDA or GDA either.

I think some members of the old OPC are still upset. How does the narrative go.

The real architect of the OPL was who ?
Who brought everyone back to OYSA ?

I don't know the hit to their pocket book but make no mistake about it, youth soccer is about money, lots of it and whose pocket it ultimately winds up in.

Not sure Thorns hurt ECNL anymore.

OYSA clubs on the other hand - as the Westside guys like to say - get ravaged in the early years.

Ravaged? It is hard to say that a team or club has been ravaged by the MLS academy, when said club is pimping their players to the MLS academy. Besides, the MLS academy always returns their players in a year or two. Less talented, broken, behind every learning curve...but at least they return them....Go Timbers.

Nope- they almost never go back to their old club, for whatever reason.

I find it interesting when clubs a) want the Timbers to select their players, so they get recognition and credit, and get all pissy and complain about favoritism when the Timbers choose players from other clubs, but b) then complain about "recruiting" and "stealing" if their players actually do leave.

It's kind of like a stuck up girl who wants guys to ask her out.... just so she can tell them no.

Curious. What guys at Westside are you talking about?

I've seen players leave and come back to their former clubs while others choose to go elsewhere. Regularly happens across the board and even prior to the formation of USCS.
