Not necessarily. A proven transfer is worth more than an unproven high school recruit in most cases. Few freshmen start or end up being good in college so an experienced player makes sense to help a team immediately.

All these posts about transfers make it seem like a one-sided transaction; the transfer isn’t deciding where they go unilaterally. The coach where they are going decides and invites them, and $ is certainly part of the equation. Transfers have always been part of recruiting, but with the Covid deferrals and players trying to find a conference that is likely to play given the Covid restrictions it’s on steroids the next year or two. You will definitely see transfers taking fresh recruit spots more.

Ya sure they will take a transfer who’s shown nothing over a club stud .You are definitely a losing (coach) for sure.

But we've never had so many seniors transferring. A coach would love an incoming stud sophomore who will give you 3 years. It's different with a grad student who can only give you one more year. Sure you'll give them PT if they have the goods, but some of that money needs to go to shrewd recruiting choices also.

A transfer also to work for the student athlete - it to be the right program for them and they still have to get admitted. Lots of pieces have fall into place

            First, not the “coach”.

And why wouldn’t bringing in a transfer for only 1-2 years be a shrewd recruiting choice? It isn’t written in stone that a high school or club star will do nearly as good in college or they won’t get injured or that they will even like the college/team once they get there and won’t transfer themselves. With a transfer you are getting a more mature player who has actually played in real college games and shown what they can do. The team gets a player who can produce on day 1. College coaches aren’t building some fantasy lineup of unproven players for future glory. They want a winning record, tourney spot, championship THIS year. Their job depends on it.

Another poster implied that transfers are wash outs and that is totally wrong! Some of the best players are transfers. They just see better opportunity at another team. Go educate yourself by looking at some of the talent that has recently transferred.

Not who you are going back and forth with, but who says you (or I) aren't just "HS Dads".

Of course each side genuinely believes that their offering (The proven veteran vs. The #1 draft pick) is superior. Just like everything else, it comes down to the actual player and the actual style and needs of that team. There is no blanket statement

Here’s an article on the best 22 MA girls players of the last decade. Excluding the 7 still playing or who haven’t entered college yet, 3 of the remaining 15 transferred during their college careers. And they weren’t washouts; some went on to champs at their new schools. So if 20% of the best studs that MA has ever produced entered the transfer portal, what the f**k do you know?

article is behind a paywall, but it looks like a list of HS players who put up gaudy stats on winning teams. All it proves is that HS success is a terrible indicator of "best" players.

I agree. Sam Mewis is terrible and should not be consider a "best" player.

Recruits are an educated guess whether they COULD play at a certain college level. With transfers you KNOW what level they can play at. The odds are in the transfers’ favor.
