UNF has a D1 mens and womens soccer programs. Apply early to colleges like UNF and the student may get merit scholarships that they would not get at the Big Four. Then if they don't get a spot on the soccer roster they have the merit money scholarship.

'It’s a new semester at the University of North Florida, where fall classes are underway for more than 17,000 students, and the numbers are just in: UNF has admitted the smartest and largest incoming freshman class in the University’s history.

About 2,500 of those students are incoming freshman, who make up one of the most academically talented first-year classes. UNF’s fall freshman have an estimated high school grade point average of 4.31.
“This academic year, we received another phenomenal freshman class,” said UNF President David Szymanski. “Our beautiful campus was the first school of choice for these high-achieving, focused students who are eager to learn.”

This fall semester has also had the largest incoming freshman class ever, nearly 7 percent larger than last year, with a new record high in full-time equivalent students, almost 4 percent higher from last fall. This freshman class also has set a new high in the number of credit hours attempted, nearly 4 percent higher over last fall semester.

UNF increased efforts to working with students in underserved populations. As a result, more than 5,200 students have been awarded Pell Grants, a substantial 26 percent increase over last fall. UNF is committed to affordability by awarding $114 million in financial aid annually to its students. Overall, about half of all UNF students receive financial aid.

According to new statistics from LendEDU, UNF is ranked No. 59 when it comes to lowest student loan debt out of more than 1,000 public and private colleges and universities in the country. The University is ranked the 29th lowest when compared to public colleges and universities, confirming that UNF is a great value, allowing graduates to start their professional careers without the more significant financial burdens of their counterparts at other institutions.

Here are some interesting facts about the freshman accepted at UNF this fall semester:

    • This class includes students from 56 Florida counties, 23 states or U.S. territories.
    • After Florida, the states with the most freshman are Georgia, North and South Carolina, New York and Puerto Rico.
    • This incoming freshman class has 19 international students, with a majority coming from Brazil and Venezuela.
    • Fifty-eight percent of the new freshman class are female, while 42 percent are male.
    • Overall, 1 in five UNF students are first in their families to attend college; approximately 21 percent of this year’s incoming freshman are first generation college students.

UNF students are also seeing the benefit of small class sizes, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 18 to 1 and the benefit of personalized attention that can’t be found at larger universities. Students also have the chance to participate in transformational learning opportunities or TLOs, which range from undergraduate research projects and internships to study abroad and community projects. As a result, UNF students travel abroad at twice the national average.

“Providing students with seamless classroom experiences and hands-on learning are hallmarks of a UNF education, and there’s no question that the level of experience and opportunities afforded to our undergraduate students set us apart from other schools,” said Szymanski.

Additionally, UNF tops the schools in the State University System when it comes to graduates being gainfully employed in Florida, with the average graduate salary being 22.7 percent above the national median.

UNF, a nationally ranked university located on an environmentally beautiful campus, offers students who are dedicated to enriching the lives of others the opportunity to build their own futures through a well-rounded education.'

The UNF Fall Freshmen average GPA of 4.31 is maybe using the final high school transcript submitted after graduation. The mean GPA of those fall freshmen admitted is likely lower using the Junior end-of-year transcript.

But a good player with great grades will have more opportunities soccer wise and academically. Studs are few and far between and a coach will only go to bat with the admissions office for the studs. An academic stud might get a very nice merit package that doesn't come out of a coach's budget and for the player it sticks all four years. A lot parents think their kid will be so hotly desired his grades wont' really matter. Guess what - their kid isn't that good and there's 15 more just like him vying for the same spot. Kids with the better grades has the better shot also because coaches don't want players who might struggle academically. If you're just at the lower end of a school's standards that's one thing. If you're a few deviations away, especially for a school that cares about their standards, it isn't so easy. You're not getting into Duke with grades more suited for Central Arkansas

Good point that you can have a lower GPA when the test score is higher to get into UCF. 1360 SAT is about at the 90th percentile in the nation.

Can a merit package for grades ever be taken away when a student's college GPA dips to low?

Yes but it's usually a pretty manageable GPA. If you're smart enough to garner good merit money you should be able to sustain the grades. Unless you're in the conferences that guarantee your athletic $ all four years your $ can be revoked. Reviews happen on an annual basis. Get cut, quit, or there's a hot new freshmen the coach wants to give the $ to and your $ could be gone. For men athletic grants are miniscule. If a school wants you you can easily get 50% off or more, but you need to be above the average student for them.

Net/net grades matter. Thinking about getting a private soccer trainer? Don't. Spend it on a tutor or test prep class

But as the big four increase admissions mean scores, so too do the other colleges in Florida like UNF. Students can get admitted to UNF in the summer or as a transfer from the JuCo with less of a GPA than required of the fall freshmen.

If your kid can't get admitted to UNF, then you have more important issues to deal with than crying on TS. UNF is no more than a glorified JUCO itself. It is a bottom tier D1 school that recruits mediocre talent and average students. Admitted and attending are two different data bases. Lots of kids apply, are admitted and then choose to go elsewhere. UNF is the the backup school to the backup school.

UNF is a very good backup school when the average GPA of the actual freshmen class is 4.3. People somehow forget that there are very smart and talented students at colleges everywhere for varying reasons including being the backup for not getting admitted into one of the Big 4 colleges in FL.

Wish we would have pushed our kid take a test prep class and take the tests more than once.

Definitely spend your money there, either on a good class or tutor. Definitely take it at least twice. Take multiple practice tests. Even beforehand there are online resources to determine what test might be better for your kid. Some do better with SAT (one of mine) and others the ACT (another of my kids). You have to plan well ahead too with testing - it's only offered so many times a year and locations fill up quickly. If you want them to take it 2-3 times you have to plan accordingly.

Yes, good advice. Take SAT and ACT. Figure out which one your kid has a better time with. Prep for that. Take as many times as you can. 1 extra point can mean $1000s in merit money. Understand what each school you apply at is offering for merit money and the scores needed to get it. Start this process early.

You may get lucky and crush the scores on your first try and be done. Most don't get lucky.

TS customers like freedom of speech. FL pubic Universities should also give back to the FL high school students and communities, or they will lose more community customers like corporate sponsors and alumni.

College soccer games in the future will be in great attendance. FSU and UF need men’s soccer.
