hitting the books vs. juggling the ball...which is better?

Since the Trump/anti Trump idiot took over the other thread, let's try again, but shift gears a little bit.

Is it better to steer your kid toward academics, or soccer for their overall welfare?

Just like in college, both. They can either handle it or can't.

If you need to ask the question all is lost on you and your child.

This has got to be a troll thread. Why do you even need to ask? A soccer career might last through college. That's a big MIGHT because there is a very high rate of attrition. After college if a player continues to play, for 99% of them it will be in the adult beer leagues. Most kids can qit playing soccer in college and their overall welfare will be the same or better. Guess what happens when a kid quits on academics and focuses on soccer?

I am gonna say it depends on how smart your kids is....or isn't.

IMHO for my kid it is definitely academics. She is getting recruited by few out of state mid-major D1 colleges and a few instate D2 private colleges. Unless any of them match up academically to the in state public colleges AND offer a lot in scholarship (academic and athletic) money then she will be going to an instate public college. She knows soccer is not her ticket to college. Her grades are her ticket. With Bright Futures, Florida Prepaid, and a 529 it would be silly(and more expensive) for her to go to a school just because they offered her a scholarship to play soccer. I would be more proud of my kid being debt free after college than her playing college soccer with a lot of loans. If she can graduate debt free AND play college soccer...then it's a win-win.

This is a horrible question as it presents a false dichotomy. It's not a matter of either/or, but of establishing priorities. In general, academics should probably take a priority in the long run. But for a few, soccer may be the answer.

Sorry, but the political discussion is more interesting at this point.

D2 is generally considered to be inferior to D1 & D3 for academics AND soccer.

I agree. However unless I’m mistaken there aren’t any D3 schools in Florida.

Get out of the state. There's a whole big world out there. It's good for your kid to go to school further afield and it opens up a much bigger world for them academically and personally. Some of the best schools in the country are D3 and they have some decent soccer as well. In the end the education matters much more.

Pocahontas Academy is the best. They play soccer bareback, with traing by Presdental runner Pocahontas herself.
