The position on UCLA WSOC only cost $250,000. A bargain it seems and an NCAA finalist ring (second place gets a ring too just not as large), jacket, being able to share in all the team accolades.

Some sports are easier to evaluate, say track where the fastest is the fastest. Many other sports are not, including soccer.
A true soccer player should not be suspect no matter what league. The problem was/is this "student-athlete" was not a true soccer player except maybe in a Playstation league. That's a new emblem/badge, the video student athlete (VSA league).

Some club parents would pay $250,000 for this and save the cost of travel to practice and games, days out of the office, days out of school, and no out of pocket for club fees, training, recruiting visits and the expenses associated with it, id camps and the expenses associated with it, and all of it.

Parents being able to trick the system and get a guaranteed spot on a national contender and you get to reap the benefits on your resume, at reunions, and such. Absolutely there are club families that would jump at the chance.

So the Ivy prestige was worth more than the Women's Soccer national title contender at a good school too? And worth $150,000 more?

Because it was about the school, not the sports. Duh.

In the Yale example it was, but not the UCLA one I would assume as she was added to the team. I am surprised that the price of the Yale brand wasn't more than $150,000 over the UCLA brand. Come on fellow Ivy's, this is an outrage.

So, I'm in VA. How does that fare up there? Depending on where you are in VA, it can be a lot or average.

Where UMass is located you'd be quite comfortable. In the Boston area less so, especially if you have kids.

The story notes that the Feds have indicated that this investigation has not ended. More indictments to come it seems.
Also, some parents are considering cooperating or facing additional charges.

Hopefully they’re looking further into the SAT cheating and fake learning disability cheating. That is probably much more rampant than fake athletes. Let’s stop the cheating!
