Surf is a dead end. Ok at best at younger ages. They are all over the place with their hands in everything that this business model will never get them in ECNL. SUSA is waiting in the wings for ECNL and will eventually get it, but who cares because it will just be the new NPL with DA around. By 12/13 if your kid is any good they definitely won’t be at Surf any longer. Just a fact. Personally if you are serious about soccer I would go to a more established club. There are about 5 or so I would consider depending on where you live.

Had an email about tryouts the other day with no notification. We weren't interested but if we were we can't just drop everything and go do that last minute

Surf's fine at the younger age groups (07/08). These teams are competitive and beat or tied the so called best teams in these age groups. Moving to a different club when they get older may make sense, but it seems better than most clubs at this age. Guess it all depends on the coach.

What's the big appeal of ECNL? Seems like an insane amount of travel when an NPL title gets you to the same exact place.

NPL is now the C league. If your kid wants to play in college then their odds are now much lower

ECNL is highly respected by both colleges and the national teams. DA will displace it probably sooner than later but it still is above NPL.

You must go to the colleges specific ID camp. Meat market/showcase tourneys are a long-shot, schools are now expecting kids to come to them. I agree NPL on lowest tier but as to how that relates to playing in college, not so sure. All 3 leagues are now watered -down which is very evident to all, including college coaches.

That only makes sense. Why would a coach want to waste time money and energy on players that are not an actual match? Many variables at play matching a student to a university. College would seem sensible to pursue players that are actually interested in attending.

Some schools don't do their own events, so they latch onto other opportunities to see players. When mine was starting out he did a big one - most to just see what it was like - and did the same thing you do for any showcase, reached out to coaches at schools he was interested in. A few developed into visits and one offer, along with other programs he developed relationships with via club showcases and on campus events

NY Surf trying to get DA the old fashioned way: backing political candidates...

                          From Grant Wahl on SI.com:

Kyle Martino: The former player and on-leave NBC Sports analyst provided the names of six donors, all but one of whom said they had no business before U.S. Soccer. Five of them said they were fine publicizing their names: Rick Van Benschoten, Eric Eisner, Ralph Martino, Matt Popoli and Michael Meyer. The sixth donor did not wish to make his name public. Popoli, the president of New York Surf Soccer Club, said his non-profit club is hoping to get into the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

It's incredible that parents are paying $3k+ a year for their kids to develop, and enough of that is excess allowing the club to donate to substantial sums to US Soccer.
