Before my daughter's class (c/o 21) signed their NLI back in November the college coach sent an email to all commits letting them know that current seniors on the roster will not be awarded athletic scholarships for 2021-2022 season.
That makes no sense "...that current seniors on the roster will not be awarded athletic scholarships for 2021-2022 season."

If the coach recruited correctly 4 years ago, the current seniors should/would be some of the strongest, most experienced players on the roster. Why would you give the athletic scholarship to an 18-year old who has never stepped on a college pitch when you could give the scholarship to a mature 22-year old with 3-4 years of college soccer under their belt?

Ideally, you're logic would be correct, but how many coaches actually recruit correctly? How many plans go afoul? Many coaches would rather have upsides to freshman than plateaued upper classman. Loyalty < job security for many.

That's not correct. The NCAA has explicitly said that seniors who remain for another season cannot be deprived of scholarships.

My kid's school reduced their incoming 2021s from 14 to 8 because of this.

What's likely happening at your daughter's school is that the university funded the amount of the athletic scholarships, i.e. replaced them. Not all schools have the endowments to do that.

As covered many times before, the top tier academic and private schools do not give academic merit money and the grants and financial aid is based on family financial need. It’s not only the Ivies that work this way. This gives State and Public institutions a major advantage in recruiting.

For example: FSU can offer a few stud NT types or a stud internationals big percentages of athletic money, even a full ride. And then they back fill their roster with in state players that get very little soccer money but have Bright Futures and low in state fees. They also typically have a less competitive academic acceptance profile and there is some wiggle room to give an athlete some “academic money.”

Schools like Stanford, Duke, Notre Dame, USC, Georgetown, and Wake Forest do not have that advantage. They have to recruit well and not miss because the number of high quality players that are going to a school with a 70-80k a year price without any real financial assistance is way way less then the number of players that might be willIng to walk on or play for minimal athletic money at the big in State schools.

The Ivies have the additional disadvantage of not having athletic money either.
You might be right on this, however, FSU changed their model for money. Their players that NEED athletic money receive it over those that don't. You might have a not NT player that NEEDS money to attend school and a NT player that doesn't. FSU gives the money to the player that needs it.

They aren't the only school that has moved to this model.

              That’s an over simplification.

FSU is going to give athletic money to players that they want and more to those THEY need. Let’s not kid ourselves. The coaches are paid to get results. If they need to be sure they get a player they absolutely want they will be sure that player gets the athletic money they “need.” Lol.
