Are you kidding ? Confusing? Its really simple. What year was your child born? That is what team he is playing on. It does not get any more simple. Not What year/ What month and what day. If you can not understand calendar year teams maybe it is you that is simple.

Now if you don't like the system because it does not benefit your child thats a different selfish story.

It is confusing because 2004s are a different "u" depending on sanctioning body and it impacts how you implement small-sided mandates. Further the supposed alignment with international standards has turned out not to be true. Folks complaining last week were coaches, parents were whining 6 months ago to a year ago.

The only bad things that happened from the change....

06's got cheated out of a much needed extra 7v7 year.
'05's and OYSA '04's got cheated out of a much needed 9v9 year.
'07's missed out on a critical 7v7 year.

This is the only place where US Youth failed our kids. But everything evolves around the "Cups" so they needed to move those kids up a year to keep the "U" thing going for state cups and beyond....that is all driven by the parents.

If OYSA and US SOCCER were truly about the development of our kids they would take it a step further...

        No posted results until U14
        9v9 through U13
        No state cups until U14
        No regional cups until U14
        No national cup until U16

        No punting until U14

No offsides at U9 and U10
Offsides line (22 yards from goal) at U11 and U12

        2v2 league for 4, 5, 6 and 7 yr olds

Build out lines for 7v7 are good now.

Do these above and then you'll begin to see some true development with 12-15 years

I think you have a point, except I don't understand why the no offside? (My daughter is a ref and she always corrects me if I say offsides.) That would not help with stopping the bootball???

Not the OP, but banning GK punts in U10 and below is a big help.

Maybe youth soccer should take a page from hockey and add the equivalent of the blue lines and the icing rule--if a passed ball crosses both blue lines (going forward) without touching a player; it's an IFK for the other team. (This rule can be relaxed somewhat for passes on the ground--it's passes through the air that are the main concern).

(And unlike hockey's icing rule, no exceptions should the ball manage to roll into the net...)

They do that "blue lines" type rule for some indoor leagues and it's great. No bootball on a small field.

should be no punting from U12 and lower.
