    Referee Grade changes

On this forum and in general, soccer referees are constantly criticized and belittled. Not that such doesn't happen in other sports, particularly baseball, basketball and hockey.

US Soccer is making sweeping changes:

Grade 9 will eventually be eliminated.
The minimum age to become a referee will become 16.
Grade 8 referees will be excluded from centering any games over U16.
There will be two classes of grade 7 referee, one that is required to take a new fitness test based on the beep test, and one that is not.

Does anyone see anything positive in these changes?

I think the minimum age of 16 is a great idea. My son became a Grade 9 at the earliest age he was allowed (12 or 13 years old) and he was in no way, shape, or form ready for the harassment and abuse he took from u8 and u10 parents. It was incredible.

Had he been made to wait, he might be reffing now, rather than stressing out about finding a job that he could work around his own practices and games, etc.
