June 1st is looming large and coaches need to lock local players down quickly before players have the chance to visit other schools.

and only an NLI if you're getting athletic money (or the school gives you FA or merit $). All else is verbal regardless

In other words, a school can offer $2k to cover books and you’ll still get the photo of him signing an NLI that you can post on social media and tell your friends he got a “scholarship”. Nine scholarships split across 28-30 players for mens soccer—do the math.

              9.9 x $50,000 = $495,000

              $495,000 / 30 = $16,500

If you don’t already know that the money is not split evenly, you probably need to learn more about college soccer.

How many men’s soccer players on a college roster get a “full ride?”

Maybe 1 or 2. High impact starting GK and top 1 or 2 players at most. Lots of programs don’t even have 9.9. They have 3-5 total to work with.

If a program has 3-5 total men’s scholarships there are 0 players getting a full ride.

In 2019-20 the average men’s D1 soccer scholarship was $15,008. The lowest team average was $5,809. The highest was $31,062.

That also doesn't take into account foreign players who typically get huge packages as an enticement to come. They can go to school at home for free or practically free. If a program has 4-8 internationals as many do, there will be pennies left for anyone else even if it's fully funded.

The D1 coaches I am friendly with say international players are much more realistic about scholarship money than American parents are. Internationals come for less scholarship money than people believe. Many come from families with money. Those that wash out of European soccer programs hope to come here and work their way into the MLS. College is their gateway to US professional soccer. The international full ride is a gross generalization.

Also, some internationals qualify for full financial aid, so don't need an athletic scholarship. So they have a "full ride" but it's need based.

Not the poster and I agree the full ride thing is overblown but coaches still give them some decent $, enough of it to make a difference to a coach's total pot he can dole out. Look at rosters and see who plays the most. Players with the most PT generally get the most $. Chances are the international players are playing the most. Internationals typically are either trying to get into MLS as a last ditch effort to play professionally (and some do, half the MLS drafts are international players) or their families are happy to have their kids attend a US university, gain that life experience and education for their future.

Now that athletes can stack financial aid, merit scholarships and athletic scholarships with no repercussions to a coaches budget it frees up even more athletic money for other players.
