gotsoccer rankings are heavily weighted towards doing well in tournaments, period. You can get thousands of points for a tournament and like hundreds for league season winner. And basically nothing for individual games. the top teams go to more tournaments which serves to stretch out the ranking spreads in their favor. which doesn't necessarily make the rankings wrong, but seems like an odd way of getting there.

youthsoccerrankings.us takes a more reasonable seeming approach. according to them (grain of salt here) they have the same coverage of games but have predictive power off 66% compared to gotsoccer's 32%

"To predict the goal difference when two teams play each other simply subtract the score of one team from the score of the other. "

Interesting how many teams are separated by tenths of a point, outside the top 5 or so.

Yeah that’s discussed if you actually look at the website.

yet several Massachusetts teams use the outdated got soccer formula to recruit uneducated parents. Look here our U-11's are ranked 23rd in the entire country...come join us. It's kind of false advertising but it also can be effective. In reality Massachusetts best teams MIGHT be able to beat the 23rd ranked team of say Texas so got soccer points are geared to clubs playing in the right tournaments as well as playing in as many tournaments as possible. VERY easy to manipulate got soccer.

Also RDL and MLS U13 U14 don't even record game scores, so no points for league play. RDL is a double roster and breaks into 2 teams per club for games and tournaments and mixes the kids up for each event. All this contributes to inaccurate gotsoccer points and rankings. It makes this point system useless.
              This is spot on.

                  it's a circle

                  clubs market with gotsoccer rankings
gotsoccer bases rankings on tournaments and league results
clubs pay gotsoccer for tournament management
leagues pay gotsoccer for league management
                  rinse and repeat

Right now rankings are a complete waste. Let's look at U16 boys. Aztek is #1 in MA because they won 8th division at Jefferson last March, yet NEFC ECNL (arguably one of the top 3 teams in state) did not place in the top division at Jeff. Is Aztek NPL better team than NEFC ECNL? Not even close.
Let's not forget the formula Gotsoccer uses. Your team wins top bracket of tournament that is worth 9000 points, but they deduct 20% of the points you already have and your team walks away with 4,000 points. Now the team that placed 2nd gets 4,500 points to start but because they don't do many tournaments and have a low ranking they can walk away with the same 4,000. This leads to false numbers on actual ranking. My sons team has been #1 in MA a couple times and that equated to about #180 nationally. They have "held there own" by losing 1 point games to nationally ranked top 5 teams, and have lost to nationally ranked mid 300 teams. Gotsoccer rankings are a joke except for clubs to say "Come play for the #1 boys team in MA"

if NEFC ECNL 05 team is a top U16 team in Mass, then Mass soccer is in real trouble.

I said Top 3 in MA. Who else?
                        Bolts MLS is probably top.
Follow that up with Bolts ECNL
                        Revs don't have U16.
                        Stars ECNL?....Not even close

Juventus claim their boys program is the top program around yet look at the level of competition they will be playing in the spring. They are a bunch of frauds.
Yep, terrible that the NECSL let in those "Mom and pop" clubs play in the league rather than creating an environment where an existing club could make them affiliate, wear a different logo on their chest and then play in the league.

Plus, the mom and pop leagues will likely play in the lower divisions, so it’s not diluting the quality of the top tier it’s just adding quantity to the bottom so that it’s not always Surf v Juventus v Seacoast
