Here is how the Thorns can come in and take over. Double the salaries of existing coaches and make it free the girls.

Or better yet, just disband the Thorns and have the NWSL team work with the two local ECNL teams.

What kind of stupid is this? CU is what THUSC calls their ECNL program. THUSC is the actual club in the ECNL plus CU actually does well and currently ranked 20th.

The Timbers Thorns are terribly run and have a terrible record. There is nothing that would justify them getting into the ECNL.

Given that THUSC/CU hasn't had much coaching stability recently (with two principal coaches leaving, along with a significant exodus of players), CU might not be well positioned long term. After all, clubs occasionally catch lightning in a bottle and field one or two really good teams, and the 03 girls are really good. But they will age out soon, and CU is weak at younger ages. With KL going to Oregon State, the magic (if there ever was any, other than inertia) might be gone.

The club wasn't able to even field a single premier team last season in the pre-ECNL age groups. And with many of the top GDA terms returning to ECNL, expect CU to slip further.

(And then there's the dumpster fire at Liberty HS... if ECNL had pro/rel, we all know who would have been sent down a long time ago).

Always love it when adults take shots at kids and call them "weak". Everyone from 2006 up is good and 4 of the 5 age groups went to the ECNL Champions League last year, so I assume you are talking about the 2007s and 2008s who are made up of kids who are 12 and 13. Stay classy. That being said, it will turn around as more are attracted to the program with the fall and uncertainty of GDA.

Won’t be free, but the Thorns Academy still have their subsidy to spend how they will. And if that is a couple thousand per girl, that’s going be a good draw compared to FCP and CU. The biggest threat to CU has always been this possible scenario. Both in ECNL, but Thorns get a subsidy from the parent club.

At $7,500 cost to each family, there is NO subsidy. There is NO parent club. It is the Westside Thorns. And why would Peregrine subsidize anything right now?

Let's do the math using your $2,000/girl scenario. Say 6 teams of 16-18 kids for ages 2008 through 2003. That's a total of roughly 100 kids. At $2,000/girl, who is it you anticipate shelling out $200,000? For what? That's why the Thorns jacked the price up to $7,500 this year ...

Dont forget to add this to the $7,500.00 Fee as stated on their form.

What Costs are not included in the Thorns Academy Fee?
                  • Player’s personal travel and incidental expenses (such as food, etc.)
                  • Player’s and Coach’s travel expenses for additional USDA Approved Events (such as Surf Cup)
                  • Player’s Nike Uniform Kit – kit is for the 2019/2020 and the 2020/2021 Seasons
                  • Additional Travel Fees related to Playoffs for teams that make playoffs

Yes, $200,000 sounds right, it is a fixed amount divided among the girls or program as they want. The subsidy wasn’t tied to the GDA program, and was going to continue whether the Thorns chose to stay in the GDA (which they ultimately did) or went elsewhere. And you’re just wrong about the price increase being tied to a loss of the subsidy. The increase was due to two new showcases that were being required by the GDA, in combination with 4-5 additional travel weekends for games. This season had been a really light travel year. Who let this imbalance develop is unknown to me, but it caused the price to be lower than average (around 3,000), and was going to cause next year to be more. Add in the two week long unexpected showcases and you had the resulting sticker shock.
So, not being in GDA anymore, it is not going to end up being $7500, they’re just figuring where they’re going to play. But it was pretty clear that they had the $200k wherever they landed, and many thought it could be better spent outside GDA.
You’re welcome by the way, for me taking the time out of my day to educate you.

CU 03 ECNL team would dominate the soccer landscape in Oregon for the age group. Out of state, not so much. Look at their record in the Florida ECNL event , 66 out of 66, lost the third game 7-0.

Let’s see, the revenue the Thorns/Timbers are generating right now is well, $0 and you still think they’re going to pony up $200,000 to the Westside Thorns?

7-0 loss was against a top 20 team from Illinois.
