Help a newbie out , odp, ecnl, thorns academy ect

Can someone break all these things down for someone with a u11 daughter just getting into all of this?

Factual and unprejudiced would be awesome if anyone is capable of that. And bonus points if you include links to information about the program.

ECNL is a national league for girls u14-u18. This will be in Oregon this year.

ODP is 'Olympic Development Program'. Even the name is antiquated considering the Olympics is not people's goal in soccer anymore. The Timbers now run this program for Oregon.

Thorns academy does not exist so there are no links.

ECNL (Elite Club Nation League) is for u14 and older
ODP (Olympic Development Program) - for girls born in 2003-1998 for this year
Thorns Academy - for girls born in 99/98/97 for this next year

ECNL does not exist, yet, in Oregon. It is a league created to bring in only clubs that are committed and dedicated to a higher set of standards and thus are capable of competing at higher levels. This is a league that your club must apply to be a part of, meet the criteria, and then be accepted. The teams in this National league are in regions of 8-12 teams. These 8-12 play their own league with each other, typically 2 teams per state (can vary). Since the teams are spread apart in different states, there are typically travel cost that come with it. A bonus is that each game should be competitive as each club has had to meet specific competitive criteria before even being allowed in. The ECNL also have a created a couple tournaments that are exclusive and bring in good collegiate attention.

ODP is a program that was created to pool together the best talent in each state (supposed to be no club bias), to train them at and elite level and use these teams as an identification process and training ground for the Youth National teams. In Oregon, ODP is overseen by the Timbers/Thorns organization, but still has to run in conjuncture to the National ODP organization. Currently and more so in the past, typically players have been identified for the National team through their ODP experience. In OR and several other states, ODP is also being used to identify players for the Timbers Academy team and potentially the Thorns Academy Team (which is just starting for the first time and has no precedent). When you play ODP, it supplements your club team. You do both at the same time, they usually don't have many conflicts. Coaches are also from different clubs. Great opportunity for kids to get experience playing with other kids from other teams without having to change clubs.

Thorns Academy is a new program that is being created for the girls. Since there is nothing else like this, a Professional Women's team creating a youth academy, it will all be new as to how it works and who they play. So far, the only things that are definite is that this year they'll be focusing only on 1 team ( girls born in 99/98/97) and that there will be a tryout in July. There are many speculative rumors about what this program will or will not look like, but there has been nothing more that is set in stone as fact at this point.

ECNL and ODP both offer great opportunities. Each person has their own opinion which is better. They're different and both have created chances for women soccer players to greatly improve and have more chances to pursue their passions and dreams in their own ways.

Thorns Academy has a great sound to it, but is a mystery. Love the idea, but anxiously waiting to see if it meets its expectations that we all have for it.

            all you need

is the best place for your child. start local and work your way up. what determines how far a player will go is how much they love the game, how much they want to play, how much they want to train to get to another level. (if they want to) i would recommend starting local, and hopefully your player rocks it, then move up, and keep moving up.

the others, above, have broken it down fairly well.

(if you're wondering i am a coach, i have coached rec - through pro players. have played rec through semi-pro. had some tryouts for pro that didn't work out.)

You can't find it because it doesn't exist. Another TA myth.

There isn't a link yet. Letter to current ODP families stating Mid-May meeting with Mid-July Tryouts. No details.

No we weren't wondering but you certainly do have the typical attitude for a club coach. Thanks champ

Nor does ECNL exist in Oregon either. Another FC, THUSC, Crossfire myth.
