It's so screwed up now. All of the leagues are watered down at least in this area of the country. The leagues should cap themselves at a certain amount of teams and then they should compete against each other for true championships. That would equal out everything.

NYCFC was an odd ball with GDA. It was one of only 2-3 MLS clubs that got involved with GDA; all the rest were established girls clubs. The NY board said they didn't put much effort behind it and even though they were a top team last year they didn't get many at tryouts last spring. It makes little sense for an MLS club to be involved with girls soccer since there's no money in it and no pro development for them to benefit from. MLS clubs are questioning their involvement with BDA too, so why would it do girls?

The NY area is over-saturated with clubs and should be paired down but it's too bad they lost one of the better clubs.

NYCFC was really just WCFC under a different name. ECNL forced WCFC to choose between ECNL and GDA, so WCFC got NYCFC to put their name on it. Coaching staff and administion was all still WCFC people.

Between the influx of girls from my NYCFC and continuing to snag the best girls from Clarkstown once they hit U13, U14 World Class will have some very strong ECNL & ECNL 2 teams.

ECNL 2 is not yet confirmed. Nor is an expansion of ECNL teams. It probably will happen but don't assume. Some NYCFC players will want to stay in GDA also, but the local options aren't great.

So in other words, another club deciding to drop GDA and focus on ECNL.

The WC club had members on the ECNL board so it could not drop ECNL altogether like some other clubs had to. Several WC ECNL teams were not great, they relied on one or two players. Why would anyone think they would be great in GDA?

As another poster noted, the leagues are too screwed up right now. ECNL at least on the east coast seems to be the better option.

If ECNL switches to graduation year age groups next year, there will be more roster spots available since the juniors and seniors will have separate teams and won’t have to be combined onto one U18/19 team. This will help with the pushed back recruiting timelines as well.

Isn't ECNL2 just a rebranding of NE Girls NPL in the northeast?

But will there be a cut off date? Or will it be just 2022 or 2025, etc? When they had “school year teams” before they had a July31st cut off so kids will fall birthdays were older in their grade but still playing with their same grade and kids born in August but very young for Thor grade were often on a team younger. In other words there’s always been kids from two graduation years playing together.

Graduating years are toss ups by state. CT is calendar birth year for school, mass maybe 10/1, Ohio 9/1 - don't quote me on anything other than CT but fact is graduation dates differ by state which means you are always going to have younger kids - only ones who care are parents of Q4 babies

I looked into this issue when we were moving with a soon to be 5 year old. Nearly all states have the beginning of their school year as the cut off date to start kindergarten (approximately 9/1). CA is November, CT has the latest date of 12/31. Two or three others mid fall. Some parents red shirt (with good reason or not) and I would imagine it happens more in CT where the date is so late.

Anyway, none of that matters when you're in high school. Any slight advantage or disadvantage you have for when you started school years ago has all but disappeared. Academic differences are gone by 3rd grade. Physical differences level out as kids finish puberty. College coaches dont know or care when you started kindergarten. They care about when you graduate and what you will do for them once you set foot on a college field.

Yeah I know. We all aren’t idiots.
Just matters for what team the are on now and if the teams will change next year - playing with friends or a new team, etc. I have one that’s very young for her grade.

All the birth year vs calendar year debate does is change the date. You won't turn into a stud without certain genetic material and innate drive to succeed. The date wont' change that. Advantages are short lived for the typical athlete (and student). In high school and college you must be able to compete against 4 years, not just one. Parents who red shirt for athletics should have their heads examined (it happens).
