Not every club has great coaching, but more often than not it's better than volunteer dads in town programs. Usually much better competition as well (unless you're in what's left of CJSA at this point). Playing better competition makes you a better player. NC parents have a number of clubs in the area that have solid to good coaching. We're not talking bottom of the barrel CJSA clubs but BS, EA, Rush (the later two send players on to higher level teams frequently) or down into NY.

If you want to be a good GK you have to get the hell out of town soccer and find a program with good GK coaching. Most town programs don't even have GK training.

        NC Soccer is a mess

NC soccer is a mess. Should probably be a separate thread but here goes:

        1. RS did not overachieve at NCHS. Five years, no FCIAC playoffs and barely made states once. Poor practices, chaotic tryouts, no game or man management. Check out the record of his teams - HS, travel, even summer tournament teams all underachieved. Got tossed because everyone knew he didn't care.

        2. NCHS AD JE only cares about football. Would rather kill off soccer so any good athlete has no choice in the fall. He can't do that so he starves the program of resources, field time, gives them worse field options, etc. Won't change until CT HOF football coach retires.

        3. Travel soccer has improved but will never make real progress until they get rid of UK Elite coaches. Transient, visa issues, coaching merry-go-round. In addition, they discourage premier and Academy players saying anyone who leaves has no NC Pride. Now the HS has hired another UK Elite coach so no change expected.

        4. Town officials actively lobby against "outside clubs" like BS from using their fields which is why after years BS is off the HS field - rather than using the ulittles local program as an advantage. Didn't realize they needed those checks for field maintenance. Now the school board is short $900K.

Shortsighted tunnel vision prevails...but as long as the football program thrives who cares?

Agree with most of this except your first statement contradicts the rest. How is someone supposed to succeed with all of the issues you mention in points 2-4? I watched them play. They are terrible. No athletes to your point. Heard they don’t allow cuts in NC either. Is this true? Add to the mix that the fact that you talk about the travel program as if it is important is a sign that you don’t have a clue. That’s why they stink on both the boys and girls sides. The best kids should leave town, but they don’t bc of some parents with their own agenda. At any rate, RS is fortunate to get off the Titanic and THS is lucky to have him.

Beachside was not cutting a 900K check for those fields. Used to have connections with a beachside Coach on staff got it next for nothing.

The school is short mostly because State cut ECS funding for towns like New Canaan. Very little money came from Beachside.

There are fields for Mickey to use in Fairfield county but Mickey refuses to to pay for them as they eat into his personal profits. You look at other clubs and they spend a lot more on fields.

Don't make Beachside and MK to out to to be some generous non-profit funding NC athletics.

New Canaan is a Class M school with only so many kids to go around for all of the sports. So the AD preaching multi-sport participation is a self-preservation move for the HS athletic teams.
And while we're talking about NC sports, the girls field hockey team has been a state finalist the last three years, winning two state titles. The boys football team has won 7 state titles in the past decade. The lacrosse program has put the boys and girls teams into the state finals 12 times since 2010. So one can see how these sports might be cannibalizing the soccer teams.

But the U11 girls just won the CT Cup, and girls and boys are starting to push out to various local clubs with a few ECNL United participants. So all in all, I'd say the soccer program is running along like any other travel program in Fairfield County. Couple of hits, couple of misses. But there is a lot of talent pushing up through the program and it will be interesting to see if the organization can keep the kids interested.

Anyway, beat the hoopleheads from Darien and all is well.

New Canaan is now a LL school for boys soccer not M. They were L for years but play against some powerhouses and incredibly strong LL schools in their conference. Given the background in the town RS and the new coach have not had an easy hand to play with.

Two full classes off what they compete in. Well done.
