At the end of the day, why would a top player want to stay at a small club with JV type players. They'll have to work 10 times harder to get recruited and will struggle to maximize their potential by not playing with better kids.

The small clubs are littered with parents like you. Sure your kids can play at higher level because they had a hat trick against Shoreline or Ginga

Both CFC ECNL and FSA ECNL took kids from Beachside in the last 2 years. There are a couple still on those teams that probably could go to if they wanted.

      Beachside is EDP 1st Division...maybe doesn't count???

Most ouside kids that make the jump to CFCU or FSA wind up on NPL teams; making ECNL is very uncommon. If either club takes an outsider for ECNL vs an inside NPL player there's political blowback. The player better be head and shoulders above club players - so in most instances clubs won't take the risk

Do you know why there are not as many at 16 and 17? Because many of the kids that are better don't care and don't tryout. Another reason is that many stopped trying even though they would clearly be better players ..... they have seen or heard that tryouts are a sham. One other very big reason that you do not have more change is that the uber clubs come with uber price tags and many kids/parents do not see the value.

ECNL issue in CT is tenure of players. They won't take a risk to replace bad players or trim their rosters to reasonable counts so they pay the price at every league game and at the end of the season in the final standings.

If FSA puts you on an ECNL team at U14, you are there for life, or at least untile you leave or your check bounces. If an ECNLer leaves for whatever reason, an NPLer might get pulled up. Occasionally, an kid will join from another club, but that is arranged directly with the ECNL coach and no tryout is involved.

It's best for the player if they learn BOTH styles, and then be able to assess which style works in which situation. This is why Oakwood sheds their own players and acquires outside ones in the later years. Their homegrown kids only know one way to play. The ability to read the situation and adjust to it is coached right out of them. Then you have the self righteous parents claiming that they would have won if the other team played possession and feel justified by that conclusion that their kids are better players. Meanwhile, the parents on the opposing team are walking away after getting the W, wondering why the competition collapsed in the second half.
                  ^This. Well said.

Check out the college placements of that group. The discussion was top level club teams not a struggling B team from Oakwood

ECNL teams aren't taking players at 16 and above unless they are no brainer top 10s in the player pool. Presumably players 12-17 beat that **** out of one another in practice already so there's no need to add a kid that might fight for a spot in the top 11.

If you think your kid can hang just phone the coach. It's been my experience that these coaches are very good about accommodating kids that want to give it a go. It's just amazing how many kids try one practice session and realize they can't swim in the deep end. Games in the EDP, CCSL and even NPL are playing at the speed of an average HS varsity game. ECNL and presumably Academy (since they've hijaked ECNL teams) are at a much higher pace and punishes players with poor skill.
