Don't kid yourself... There's absolutely boredom at a boarding school as they are there 24/7. They are also given more than one shot especially if daddy is rich
Boredom for sure - schools are often in the middle of nowhere, kids usually can only walk to a nearby town to do....not much. It's also much easier to hide "scandals" in the more insular and smaller environment of a prep school. Every school has drug and alcohol usage; not one is immune prep, public, private. But severity varies widely school to school and also how effectively the administration deals with it.

Agree that the severity varies; the kids know which schools have reputations for more drug activity. I don't agree with the idea that there's a lot of boredom at top prep schools. They keep the kids busy! Most kids have to have excellent time management skills to survive, there isn't huge quantities of free time to get the work done, let alone have nothing to do. On the other hand if a kid wants to be "bad" they will find a way.

They don't keep them busy 24/7 ... drugs break the monotony, stress and boredom of the boarding school life. In some cases the drugs also help them keep crazy hours and study habits.

They get an early start on abusing their friends' prescription drugs for ADHD etc. That happens a lot in college too. Remember the good old days of just chugging coffee and a NoDoze?

I don't think the percentage of abuse is higher than a public school at all. Those meds are locked in medical office and student has to check in daily to get it. Having prescription on you at school is grounds for dismissal.

lol and you're not supposed to have drugs at public school either. Where there's a will there's a way no matter where you go to school. Prep school kids do have more idle time on their hands and a lot less supervision.

Do they lock their pot in the medical office too?

Why would they have to? Isn’t it legal now?

like booze - only if you're 21. That and many prep schools are not in MA.

I don’t understand. Public school kids are dismissed at 2:00. Most are not involved in extracurriculars. Most prep school kids have after school commitments and many have classes on Saturday.

They also have large swaths of unsupervised time as they're not living with their families. Supervision at preps is largely a joke.

If you are on TS, you're child is an Athlete regardless of public or private.
There is no free time difference after school, and public school kids on track for prestigious college have just as much homework. Had a son in ISL and daughter in public. D had heavier workload. She also chose to work harder. There are "bad influences" in any HS but the public ones are obvious.
