The girls 2007 thread

Coaches are not allowed to contact any players from another NEP club during regular season play. Contact may only be initiated by a coach during the stated time frame for try-outs.
If a player initiates contact with a coach during regular season play, the coach must ask the player if they are committed to another NEP club. If so, then the player will be asked to inform their current club of their intent to try-out for another club before any further action may be taken. Players may not attend training sessions as a "guest" whilst playing for another NEP club. The League expectation is that clubs will communicate clearly and honorably through this process.

The stated rules are never followed. Coaches leave it up to the players to tell their coach if they want to; which never goes well. Easier to beg for forgiveness then ask for permission. If you ask and they say no, then what are you going to do? Makes it even worse if they find out; which they often do.However I will say that it is rare for a coach to approach a player and ask them to come to a practice, but they can always add subtle hints to get the message across. Once had a coach straight out tell me he can’t invite my kid to a practice so I flipped the script and just asked if she could attend

Yep, and everyone knows it. And nobody cares because they all break the rules. Oh and everyone knows that official tryouts are not the time to tryout either. And everyone knows it. And the clubs will tell you that too.

Re: Practicing with another club while being committed to your current club.
Unless you have a singed contract that says you cannot pursue any other activities outside your club, you can do what you want on your free time as long as it doesn't affect your current club. So, you are making all your trainings and matches with your current club, and attend a training with someone else separately, then there is nothing to stop that.

Conversely - sometimes a player is in over his or her head. A coach should let the family know early that they should be looking elsewhere, maybe even offer suggestions. Too many families are caught unaware May/June and they're left scrambling for something else.

Coaching/club is a small world and these guys know a lot about what goes on at other clubs. They also have been working with your kid for months and months. For all the complaints about coaching out there most will have a good idea if your kid was what it takes to move up - not just skill wise but also attitude.

We don’t want to be in the situation come June with no team to play on. The coach hasn’t been forthcoming with us when asked. Sort of beating around the bush if you will.
FWIW we were once caught completely off guard when one club we were with essentially didn't give offers to 2/3s of the team, including my kid who started every game and played almost every minute. It was a team that was doing well, good group of kids and parents. I don't know what they were thinking, but yeah almost an entire team scrambling. It was very stressful. My kid landed a good spot but not everyone did. From then on out I made sure to look around early spring and keep options open. You just never know because everything keeps changing every year. That team and the club started sliding into the gutter after that as well....no pity for them.
