Lots of very smart kids at these schools. If the 280k price tag
Isn’t disruptive OR your income is low enough to qualify for FA, it’s a great education. For anyone in the middle it’s not worth it.

My oldest attended another NESCAC in Maine. Great school but not worth going into debt over. It’s almost all private school kids that attend and frankly it’s all IVY league hopefuls that didn’t make the cut. Fabricated elitism
Not all pay full boat. Heavy discounting helps draw in top students and keep their stats up. If you're not a top admit for them you're out $250K.

You visit some of these schools and they spend as much time discussing the fancy food plan as they do they academics. When did college turn into a resort? We managed to get an education on lots of ramen and man and cheese in a box. No wonder they are pricing themselves of of business.

A good read. And for all the CFC haters, RM gets name checked.

The problem with this reply is that it implies that top students get money from schools like Bates and Bowdoin.

They absolutely DO NOT GET ACADEMIC MONEY. There is no academic money at NESCAC schools under any circumstances.

There is heavy discounting for families with lower middle class incomes and it is formulaic. The schools have pretty substantial endowments and meet 100% of demonstrated need. Two school teachers making 65K a year are probably getting 50k a year in aid from Bates etc. Aid probably taps out around 180k household income which is pretty generous. Ivy League schools follow the same scheme.

The financial aid staff at these schools don't factor in your test scores, grades, sports or activities. It's a simple formula calculated off of the FAFSA forms. Most if not all schools have calculators to determine estimated aid on their website.

The clueless posts here drive me crazy. No "top admit" is getting a dime from these schools unless their parents don't have great jobs. FACT

There are lots of fancy LACs that aren't NESCAC schools (or Ivies) that do give heavy discounts to top students. FA is separate and is based solely on family finances. Many families don't quality for FA (because outside of the Ivies the qualifications are pretty low). So they make too much for FA but not enough to afford college.

              Exactly right.

Lots of kids end up going to what many consider to be a "lesser" school because it costs the families 25k instead of 65k and the kids aren't saddled with a mountain of debt.

Schools like Bates aren't worth coming out with six figures of debt over. Most professions require an advanced degree anyway. Get your undergrad done at a reasonable place and you'll still have a fine outcome.

He doesn’t get named checked for CFC. Lol. Guy hasn’t coached club for any club in ages, but people love to spew nonsense. For the record, when he did coach club, he coached for South Central, Weston, Yankee and CFC.

Thats' the path one of mine chose. They have grad school in their sights and didn't want to start off $125K in the hole. By going to a still very good school and in their honors program they'll graduate debt free because we can cover the remainder (absurdly great package they gave her). Smart cookie :)

Do none of you know how to read? CFC was his last gig...as recently as 2014-2015. Not yesterday, but not many moons ago either.

Fake news. Only one NESCAC offers merit money. All others are need based only.
Has nothing to do with ‘top students’.
