Plus, if a family's child can actually play soccer well enough to warrant all of the money that they have thrown at "elite" club soccer then there are plenty of quality educations available where scholarship money IS available. No reason to have to settle on the education component. You can have both if the brains and the soccer playing ability are there.

One of the great things about this country is that there are plenty of really good schools for D1 and D3. And there are numerous tiers of academic and athletic talent, and mismatches where one prong is a little stronger or weaker than the other. Your point is that "if your kid was good enough" they would be good enough and smart enough to play at Stanford. There are many different fits that work for the majority of us. Thanks, though, for caring so much.
On your other echolalic point, fortunately each family can decide how much money is too much money spend on club soccer. Thank goodness you don't arbitrate everything that every family does.

Soccer is one of the least scientific talent identification sports we have. It’s not like football, baseball, basketball, track, swimming, etc where there are a lot of stats to tell the story of what kind of player a kid is. Every club wants your money so they all tell you how great your kid is. We know they are probably just blowing smoke but she does really well compared to our state’s gda/ecnl players so maybe she’ll be one of the few that make D1. Maybe she’ll get a spot at a good NESCAC school. For her that’s a lot better than most of her local schools.
Let’s face it: even plain old town travel soccer is way more expensive than what you get out of it. We’re all being fleeced, except maybe the few national team type players. So there’s no point in bashing anyone’s choice on what league they play in nor whether they go to a D1 or D3 school. In our case, our kid would be truly happy playing soccer at a good NESCAC or other D3s across the country. If a D1 she likes likes wants her, all the better. In our state it takes gda/ecnl to get there, so that’s where we’re at and there are no guarantees. We won’t know till after the fact.
