There is no more politics in team selections for either program as there is in any team selection process where everyone present will always have their own agenda - that's human nature.
For Lion's Cup, the coaches that are present at the tryout vote on the best players. It's in their interests to field the best team possible to take on Vermont.
For GSG there are little to no cuts anyway.

That Lion's Cup statement on the surface sounds right, but it's not.

They vote, then they discuss. That's where agendas come in. I know of good players who didn't make it before as the small schools felt they weren't represented enough.

Numbers for the GSG have trended downward year to year since its inception. As such, there are no cuts and everyone is welcome.

This is true but not because of politics. The Lion's Cup team rosters are often skewed heavily towards the smaller divisions 2,3 & 4. This is because Div 1 holds an all-star game the same weekend as the Lion's Cup tryouts. So players are forced to choose between the two. Many Div 1 coaches don't even tell their players that the Lion's Cup exists. It's too bad because the players should have a right to make an informed choice. They always seem to enjoy it:

Coming directly from a coach who has voted for a couple of decades now, yes, politics does play a role.

Ok sure but does it really affect the final makeup of the team? Are the best players rejected in favor of lesser talented players? Or does one of the players get picked from the group with the lowest votes because their coach happens to be there?
And isn't it true that very few Div 1 players even tryout?

On the boys side the top players int he state do not play, just a simple fact that they have club commitments and are not interested in this lower quality event.

The best girl players at the Lion's Cup are high level club players who are going on to play in college. The game doesn't conflict with the club season. There would be more but the Division 1 players generally don't go the tryout - for reasons previously stated. Not so familiar with the boys side but i imagine it's similar. Vermont's team generally includes their top players from all their divisions.

I know this thread has two separate topics but if you are talking about the granite state games you are correct but not an accurate statement if you are talking about the Lions Cup. Here is a link to the 2019 rosters (even though the URL says 2018). There are many top level players listed.

Wow - that's a really balanced roster of the divisions for the girls Lion's Cup team - a change from previous years...
