US Youth Soccer National League EDP Conferences Enhance Zone 1 Development Initiative

The EDP Leadership Council today announced three major efforts to enhance and expand programming that targets Zone 1 (8U-12U) soccer development, beginning with the 2019-20 soccer season.

    The initiatives include:

Adding Festival Programs for 7U-10U ages within EDP Leagues
Adding 11U Pre-National League (NL) EDP Conference Leagues
Adding the 12U age group to NL EDP Conferences competition within the existing US Youth Soccer Leagues Program in the East Region

The intentions might be genuine, to increase competition. But in our recent experience, the EDP programs while raising some competitive level and organization, has incredibly increased the costs for teams. The league fees and the tournaments are incredibly expensive.

For parents with kids now, who have gone through and are going through the EDP experience from U7 to U12 and the "festivals" for the younger ages, they are asking why the fees are surging.

For example, 4 years ago, the EDP Cups were only $495 per team, somebody should track it.

The league fees were similarly half the price.

Starting so early, while adding opportunities, have raised costs so high that many clubs and people can't afford it.

The kids at U-12 are pre-puberty, who knows how tall, fast, or gifted the kids will be.

I am worried that we are more focused on the business than the beautiful game.

Another case in point, it was noted that PSA is acquiring clubs in the NJ reason. My guess is that they are using some financial reserves to do so. How would parents of older kids feel? Was PSA putting the money back into soccer or trying to turn a profit?

Perfect post, 100% agree, EDP Spring cup now 1400, per team. The business of soccer has overtaken development in EDP and its unfortunate.
