to the thread OP what is your definition of "Travel"? Not outside your town? Your county? My kids are older now but when they were younger our town didn't have enough competitive teams to make it challenging enough. They'd be playing the same teams over an over again if they didn't "travel." Playing teams around the county or so is totally manageable and not a large commitment. Location matters too - densely populated areas have more teams, less populated ones are going to have to put miles on the car. Practices aren't enough. You need games to practice newly taught skills.

I agree. Travel soccer before the age of 10 is crazy and a big waste of time. Take every hour spent traveling and put your kid on the ball. He or she will be 10x better than any of the kids traveling just by doing that.
It is a racket.
