Active vs non active positions in soccer

Thoughts on which positions are most active, least active, most fun to watch, least fun to watch, etc.

    Most: Fullbacks/wings

    Least: Holding mids

We need the season to start so these types of threads go away

Revs Academy Scout gets least active for sure.

Outside backs are definitely the most active players on the field, and often among the most skilled, particularly in an offense that emphasizes attacking. In a 3-5-2 or an of it's variations, the outside backs aren't as active in the attack but are still very important, perhaps moreso, than in an offense that emphasizes attacking from the back.

This is a pretty worthless thread, though. There are too many variables.

Defensive mid is least active? Really? My D plays the #6 and plays box to box, wins tackles in the middle of the field, distributes the ball and starts most of the attacks that aren't long balls that bypass the mid. Learn to pay attention to the game and individual matchups vs who does the most scissors and stepovers.

Different definitions and roles depending on how you play will decide how much a #6 runs.

Pirlo was technically a #6, also called a deep-laying playmaker. He didn't run a ton, mostly sat back and picked passes off and distributed.

Kante is a #6, and he's all over the place. More of the Makalele role.

In some instances, a team could employ, on paper, parallel roles in a defensive mid. Think of Vieira and Gilberto from Arsenal's heyday. Viera wasn't a true attacking mid, more of a box-to-box. Gilberto sat a little deeper and got forward less. But, they also switched off often. Neither was a #10, that was left to Bergkamp.

Overall, your point is correct that MOST of the time, a defensive mid is (or should be) very active. Just with some center mid lineups, that won't be the case.

Well written take on the #6 position. I'm liking Kante's freedom to get forward a little more so far. Wasn't the prettiest strike from him, but he found a way to put the ball in the net. :)

Ha, anything offensively from Kante is pure extra-credit. I liken him to a retriever. "Go get ball, and give me ball."

Yep. Dumbest thread and dumbest comment that dm is inactive. 70-80 touches and 4-5 miles a game.
