EDP Soccer League - 2020 Spring Season Final Refund Notice

Open letter to the EDP Soccer Community

In EDP Soccer’s 20 year history, we have never been forced to cancel league play until this Spring. Unfortunately, we had no choice due to COVID-19. I want to explain how we are going to reconcile this unprecedented situation with the teams and clubs that play in EDP Soccer managed leagues.

We have focused on two primary considerations:
    1. We want to provide you with as much value as possible.
    2. We want you to clearly understand our rationale.

Teams that registered and paid for both Fall and Spring seasons (2019/2020 soccer year) in an EDP Soccer managed league --- These teams were able to enjoy 100% of the value of the Fall 2019 season. To compensate for no Spring 2020 season and to assist these teams in registering for an upcoming EDP Soccer managed league, we will issue a credit based on the registration fee paid for the Spring 2020 season. This credit can be applied to the registration fee for any EDP Soccer managed league for the 2020/2021 soccer year. Using this credit means these teams will receive approximately 80% of the full value of their league registration fees for the 2019/2020 soccer year.

Teams that registered and paid only for the Spring 2020 season in an EDP Soccer managed league --- To compensate for no Spring 2020 season and to assist these teams in registering for an upcoming EDP Soccer managed league, EDP Soccer will issue a credit based on the registration fee paid for the Spring 2020 season. This credit can be applied to the registration fee for any EDP Soccer managed league for the 2020/2021 soccer year. In addition, these teams will receive a credit they can apply to a future EDP Soccer tournament. This means these teams will receive approximately 80% of the full value of their league registration fee for the Spring 2020 season.

A customized credit letter with specific details for each team that registered and paid for participation in an EDP Soccer managed league during the 2019/2020 soccer year will be sent out in a week or so. This letter will include the exact amount of credit available per above as well as the guidelines for applying this credit.

Price Freeze --- In addition to issuing credits to compensate for the loss of the Spring 2020 season, EDP Soccer is going to freeze league prices for the next four (4) seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022 soccer years) based on prices established for the 2020/2021 soccer year. This stability should assist teams and clubs in their planning and budgeting going forward.

Summer Opportunities --- EDP Soccer is advocating for youth soccer games to be played again as soon as authorities decide COVID-19 health and safety concerns have been addressed. EDP Soccer is prepared to offer soccer programming this Summer if play is approved. Credits issued for the Spring 2020 season will be applicable depending on the programming offered.

As you know, we were days away from the full beginning of the Spring 2020 league season when the COVID-19 crisis erupted. In fact, some games had already been played. The EDP Soccer league administration staff had put in the scheduling and organizational work to make the Spring 2020 season successful. Once the crisis hit, no one knew how the circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 crisis would evolve. So, our staff worked on constantly changing scenarios. With no definitive timeline available, we had to keep working and be prepared for any eventual start date with normal business expenses such as rent, insurance, payroll, and utilities still being paid. In May, national, state and local authorities made it clear that the Spring 2020 soccer season was not going to happen even using a late start date. By this time, 75% of our budget for the 2020 Spring league season had already been spent.

On behalf of EDP Soccer, thank you for your consideration. I hope we can count on your understanding and continued support as we work together to bring youth soccer back as soon as possible and keep working together to serve our youth players for many years to come.

Hope to see you on the field soon.

    Respectfully yours,

    Steve Shilling
    CEO and Founder

Great and all BUT how do you spend 75% of your budget less than 2 months AFTER the start of the lockdowns? That seems impossible as that should have been millions of $$ yet EDP only employees a handful of people who would have been working from home by that time.

The rich get richer. How much salary do you think SS, AS, BP get? Do you really think they took pay cuts?

The 20% may not seem like much but to regular town clubs this is a financial hit. I know of entire clubs about to defect from EDP if the 20% is not returned.

So what happens to the teams fed up with EDP and want their money back? Is this even an option?

                  Per Edp Refunds FAQ page...

“Q: Why isn’t EDP Soccer giving refunds instead of credits? Our team/club paid for something --- a Spring 2020 league season --- that it did not receive. We want a refund.

A: Our standard procedures provide that once the schedule for a season is released there will be no refunds. Spring 2020 league games had actually been played when COVID-19 forced the league schedule to be suspended and, ultimately, be cancelled. Recognizing that financial strain was going to impact both EDP Soccer and the teams and clubs that play in EDP Soccer leagues and tournaments, EDP Soccer made the decision to help all entities involved work through the COVID-19 crisis and look ahead to being able to resume league and tournament play. Consequently, we focused on providing teams that had registered and paid for the Spring 2020 league with significant credits applicable for future play.

Q: What if a team disagrees with the EDP Soccer credit policy and wants a refund?

A: We provide a process to file a “hardship application”. The team will explain, in its opinion, why the EDP Soccer credit policy does not address its specific case. An EDP Soccer committee will review the facts and make a determination on the hardship request. The response to the team will be provided by July 15, 2020. The period to file requests is through June 30, 2020.”

IMO EDP is setting themselves up for a class action lawsuit if they don’t give refunds to teams who request. As it is clubs are fighting the 20% cut. 95% + of teams never stepped on the field in the Spring.

Hopefully NJYS steps in here ASAP to prevent a disaster .
