How does qualifying for NWCL happen now?

The website is pretty lacking on current info. OPL website is a year old, and states that teams have to have played in OPL to qualify, looking at the list of teams that qualified from OR that doesn't seem to be true anymore.

I hear they are letting everyone in who applies this year. Our bottom of pack TA team was allowed in. Honestly, I was surprised.

It's a better team than those lousy OPL teams they were letting in before.

Heard NWCL is expanding to let more Lower level teams in because many of the top teams aren't doing it anymore. More $$ for NWCL & more teams can feel elite. Just like ODP, every one wants your soccer dollars.

Top teams from participating clubs in each league around the NW are invited. Simple as that. If your club has chosen not to participate in NWCL, your team won't get an invite, even if they win their league, state cup, etc..

Top teams? Our bottom of Premier OYSA team is registered for NWCL this year. Must be different from other years.

Is it the top team at that age group in your club? And you don't have to participate. However, someone in your club thinks your team should. Probably as a way to recruit/retain players...

I think it must be different this year. Our club has other teams that are participating. But we were a top team in our age group and were not given an invitation. And I see other teams in our age group that finished lower than us, (state cup, spring and fall) are participating.

It looks to me like across the board, teams no longer earn spots, clubs earn spots. If a club has a proven track record, they get the spots. So the way to get into NWCL is to get a spot on a team with a top club.

Yet, a few extra spots may be available for individual strong teams that apply.

No doubt clubs would like to sign up their teams. However, teams used to have to actually QUALIFY for NWCL. If all you need to do is sign up now, it's not really a "champions league". They should now call it the Northwest Auxillary League for any team with a pulse. Still happy to do it to add to the even slimmer league pickings with only Oregon teams.

There are still several league champions playing. But there are also several "chumpions". Maybe better to rename it Northwest Champs and Chumps League. Still better competition than FWRL though.

You don't have to earn a spot any more?

Apparently not. Our team is near bottom of pack in OYSA, didn't make it past bracket play in state cup, has never qualified in the past but our DoC said we are in. We parents are a little confused.

NWCL needed a few bottom feeders for the top dogs to run up the score on and get their "B" teamers and injured players some game time. That's why your team is in.

Yes you do. RCL teams threatened to bail if Greg Ion didn't set it up where the Top four OYSA teams got in. They were tired of killing OPL teams.
This fall the top four get in next year.

The cool thing is OYSA and RCL and Vancouver Whitecaps are in talks right now working on a structure where all three play in a true youth Cascadia Cup League. It is gaining traction and I really hope it works out
