So that's how to get a commitment!

Most female ECNL or GDA type players can get a verbal at a college somewhere. There are so many D2 or D3 colleges but is it the verbal she wants. The trick is getting the verbal where they will be happy. But what is frustrating is the college hopping once they commit. These freshman college players who can’t be happy and loyal. They aren’t getting 100% play time, don’t like the team, don’t like the coach, don’t like the college enough, and on. The college freshmen players start calling other colleges to try to transfer. It didn’t used to be like this with this many college players transferring. Is it part of the culture?

The transfer rate for men's soccer is 20% and 10% for women (NCAA stats). There are many reasons why player's transfer: new coach comes in you don't like or they made it clear they don't like you; coach cuts your $; poor academic fit or other reasons you don't like the school; playing time of course as well. Plenty of regular college kids transfer also - poor fit, can get into a better school, too far from home...I don't begrudge any one transferring for a better situation. But more than once? Maybe it's not the school/soccer but you?

Legally they do not. A coach can rescind a verbal for any reason, even no reason at all - player has flatlined, they found someone better, found out nasty business about the player (social media, get arrested), player couldn't' get admitted or let grades slide. Now, most coaches won't rescind because if they develop a reputation for it they have a harder time recruiting. But it certainly does happen. A new coach coming in also isn't beholden to prior verbal commits but most will honor the closest coming in class and then decide on cuts later. Players can also rescind - change their mind, find something better, coach leaves/don't like the new guy. Nothing is set in stone until your NLI is signed, which in most cases promises you X (more often for one year at a time unless you're in a Power 5 conference) in exchange for playing and following the rules.

Verbal commitments for a freshman or sophomore mean nothing , they may actually hurt the player bc coaches won’t waste time recruiting a commited player

It’s only helpful for coaches no one else

You are expected to take yourself off the market once you and a coach make an agreement It's only fair since the coach has also stopped looking to fill your spot. It's also not fair to string people along. If you're not ready to commit then don't do it

When it is the ideal college for the player then it can be very helpful to the player to verbally commit. Then Less time and effort spent contacting a ton of hopeful college programs, finding time between league games for ID camps and visiting colleges, and more time to focus on developing soccer and academics to be ready for playing at the college.

Rules have changed. No player can verbal commit until Junior year.

Kind of....they can and do commit, they just don't tell anyone now until Sept 1 junior year. Loopholes are getting tightened again for next year again but have no doubt, studs will still get recruited before they're juniors. "average" players will now be on a more reasonable timetable

The players and colleges may not formally commit until Sept. 1 of the Junior Year, so anything made before is not ethical.

Link please. Which rules changed? Freshman and Sophomores are verbally committing every day. A sophomore just committed to Arizona yesterday. They can't sign until their Junior year but in soccer that is just a formality. In practice, college coaches and schools honor their verbal commitments.

Why do you insist on spreading lies? Trumpster I am sure.

The college may have made the player an offer before the rule changed. But now colleges may not make an offer to a player before September 1st of the Junior Yr.

Yet they're doing it! It's not going to stop as long as 1) coaches fear losing out on talent 2) families still keep pushing for early recruitment (they also fear on missing out). Even tightening loopholes will only go so far. This is soccer, not high end football or basketball where there are NCAA experts and others keeping close tabs on the nation's top recruits, looking to find just one tiny infraction. Soccer players who "commit" early will just keep it QT until September 1 junior year.

An "official" offer. They still have discussions via their club coaches. You're foolish to think this isn't still going on with top recruits. Supposedly NCAA coaches are voting in April about eliminating the ability to talk via club and HS coaches which will help a lot.

College coaches are not going to risk their jobs and college program reputations by ignoring the NCAA RULES. Phone conversations with players and club coaches could be recorded. The new rule is no official verbal offers can be made to players or accepted before Sept. 1 of the junior year. Prior verbal commits made before the rule change are still accepted but nothing is official until the NLI is signed.
