I would add not to be tempted to use soccer to get your child into a better academic school than their academic abilities. Many also drop out or transfer because they can’t handle the academic rigor or they can only get a degree in basket weaving or something which won’t help them get a career after college.

If they have the aptitude and intelligence, sports is the way to go. As an example, a large percentage of MIT admits are student athletes. In fact, that is the case for most of the smaller private high academic schools. You still have to get in as student first but playing a sport increases your chances.
