    Age Divisions

Why are the age group divisions (Aug 1 - July 31) for club soccer different than the age division for ODP and us soccer national teams (birth years)?

ODP uses pure calendar years to determine age groups. The ODP is a feeder system into the National Youth Teams. Hence, it has to be in line with the international age classification. National Teams must abide with FIFA's (the international governing body for soccer) age classification, which follows the calendar year. An ODP age group therefore goes from January 1st to December 31st, while the American youth clubs use August 1st to July 31st. We are America so we have to do everything different from the rest of the world.

For the boys, many of the clubs that are members of the US Soccer Development Academy are organizing more of their elite players into teams based on the true calendar years like ODP and FIFA.
