So, they opt out and it starts all over again with incoming recruits.
You probably never played competitive sports. Companies hire college athletes for the opposite reason you just stated. It is a fact that athletes have better grades in-season than out because their lives are more ordered. They make a commitment and stick to it. They know that hard work builds character and they also understand the concept of teamwork. They know that quitting is for losers!!!!!!

Perhaps both of you could provide some statistics to back up your claims?

I have hired a lot of engineers over the last 20 years. I have never asked myself those questions. Nor do I care.

FYI Companies hire engineers, lawyers, doctors etc. If you played a sport one interviewee has in common, or the VP was involved in, could assist hiring.

              2013 D1 Boys Playing

Let's see how the Sophomores are doing. This is the first really big class in their second season. I am going to split this up as it is really large. First come those who are playing a lot, they being defined as started 50% of their games or more.

              Player/Team/Games/GP/GS/G/A

              Mac Steeves/PC/6/6/6/4/0
              Zeiko Lewis/BC/5/5/5/2/1
              Dominik Machado/PC/6/6/6/1/0
              David Itoafa/Siena/6/6/6/1/0
              Pedro Lucas Ferreira/Bryant/6/6/6/0/0
              Matt Pease/UMass/5/5/5/0/0
              Will Szostkiewicz/UNH/6/6/6/0/0
              David McKinnon/Hartford/5/5/5/-/-
              Nate Pomeroy/Brown/4/4/4/1/0
              Andrew Wheeler Ominu/Harvard/3/3/3/0/0
              Matthew Mozynski/Campbell/3/3/3/-/-
              Felix DeBona/BU/5/5/4/1/0
              Daniel Giron/UVM/6/6/5/0/0
              Cougar Lipp/St Joe's/6/4/4/0/0
              Duff Thompson/UNH/5/4/3/0/0
              Sebastian Blickman/Bucknell/6/6/3/0/0
              Marc Greenblatt/Northeastern/5/5/3/0/0
              Ado Kawuba/BC/5/5/3/0/1
              Jackson Dayton/UVM/6/6/3/0/0

So this class has 19 playing a lot. The next closest is 2010 with about a dozen. 2011/2 are under 10. There are a handful of non MA kids on the list as is known. Still very impressive.
I will next work on the playing some list for tomorrow. GL to all.

                2013 D1 Boys Playing

The next category is playing some. These kids generally don't start but sub in. Target is playing 50% of the games.

                Name/School/Games/GP/GS/G/A

                Matt Callahan/SDSU/5/3/1/0/0
                Josh Jess/UMass/5/5/2/0/0
                Bernard Yeboah/UVM/6/6/1/0/0
                Gunnar Ericsson/UNH/6/6/2/0/0
                Chris McCormick/Bryant/6/6/2/0/0
                Lenoir Sery/UMass/5/5/1/0/0
                Brandon McCarthy/Monmouth/4/3/0/0/0
                Brandon Allen/UNH/6/6/1/0/0

Another 8 to the 19 means 27 are getting playing time. That is great news. However, there was close to 50 kids on the D1 list. The next post will cover that. GL to all.

                  2013 D1 Boys Not Playing

The last 2 posts were the good news. Now for the bad news. A total of 50 kids committed to D1 schools, and all were on the freshman rosters last year. So 27 are playing. What about the other 23? At this point 4 kids over the 27 have gotten a little playing time. These include two players from local teams that played a lot last year, made their freshman all conference teams, and now are playing very little. There may be injuries involved. Of the remaining 19, many are now off the roster, with a few in the DNP category. My sense of this is that there are now are more kids opting to be D1 depth players over playing for a lower Division. Just like the 2012's, a decent number of MA best players are no longer on their D1 teams. Take note. No names on this section. If you want to figure it out, go back on this thread to my posts from 8/13.

                        Name/Team/Games/GP/GS/G/A

                        Nate Pomeroy/Brown/15/7/7/1/1

I added the last two who were slightly under the criteria. That leaves 24 playing and 26 not. I'll cover those next.

                            2013 D1 Other Players

There are 21 other players. Of those:

                            7 Saw the field
                            1 is rostered and DNP
                            13 are not rostered.

So 25% of the D1 commited players have dropped off the roster by their Sophomore year.

Of course some of those may have transferred elsewhere, etc. but there are often quoted stats that about 30%+ of D1 athletes aren't playing by junior year. Your stats (which are excellent btw) seem to support that. Any player (or their parents) who thinks D1 is the be all end all should think long and hard about what they really want.

PS - that sought after athletic money disappears too. Have great grades? Guess what/ Merit money generally is for four years.

This was last year's analysis of how the D3 MA kids did.
