I've no doubt we will see deaths go up in red states, but it won't be the same awful rates as the NE had in March and April. More of the people getting it now are younger and they have much better survival rates. Doctors have learned a lot about effective treatments also. But, for sure there will be deaths coming. This is such a strange disease with such a long period of illness

But it is a blue state so nothing to see there
Also the biggest state so their cases per population aren't as bad as it appears. Unlike many of the red states, Gov Newsom has quickly clamped back down on wearing masks, closing bars, restaurants and beaches in hot spot areas.

That would totally suck. Also, I had to stay at a hotel recently for work and it's no fun. Couldn't use the pool, no breakfast bar or coffee in the morning, masks in all public spaces, place was empty and weird. I was glad it was just one night.

Sheriff in LA just stated they will not in force beach closures.
          Yes California is large population
Yet NY had 3 of the nation’s highest deaths total over last 10 days. How are they doing well? Even now.

the transmission rate is below 1. When RT goes above 1 - the danger of exponential growth is the threat. Exponential growth is what must be avoided at all costs.

It's enforce, not in force. Here is what the LA Sheriff's Department said. No doubt staffing is also an issue since they didn't have much notice

"The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the order on Monday which will close the beaches for all recreational activities -- as well as prohibit fireworks displays to deter large crowds. L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said his department wasn't consulted on that order and they will only enforce parking lots and traffic on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).

"We were not consulted on the beach closure, and will only assist our beach cities in closing parking lots and traffic enforcement on PCH," Villanueva told Fox 11. "In regards to enforcing the beach closure, we will not be enforcing it because we are 'Care First, Jail Last.'" https://www.foxnews.com/us/sheriff-w...aches-4th-july

Cases per capita is the relevant comparison. CA spread is in certain hot spots but much of the rest of the state is good shape. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...omepage#states

The NY rate is the lag time result of this very long exposure/incubation/symptoms/hospitalization/death of this disease. It is not a fast killer. NY's new cases are down to very few per day. That means in a a few weeks deaths will the same - very few. Same with CT, Ma and NJ. The opposite will be true in red states like TX, AZ and FL. Cases have skyrocketed and deaths will follow - the death rate won't be as high because more patients are younger, but there will a serious hospital strain and some younger patients will not make it.

That is the measure most European countries are tracking closely. Once an area gets close to 1 the health officials close in.

Why delay. Let’s just get it and move on.
Dragging it out is not helping.

Jeff Cup? South of the Mason Dixon? It's gonna happen.

No need to delay - things can be opened up gradually and carefully to make sure transmission stays below 1. It's the red states that went in whole hog and are paying the price now. Having to throttle back is worse than going slow and steady

But will enough quality teams come to make it worthwhile?

there are quality teams within 30 minutes of you if you live on the northeast. The reason to go all the way to Jeff cup is college recruiting and D1 has a dead period until August 31.

MA board said they will (try to) live stream games. MA board also said Surf Cup is cancelled which doesn't bode well for Jeff Cup.

Surely Florida, Georgia, Alabama, or Arizona have a tournament that can be used as a replacement if Virginia wusses out.

lol AZ in the summer. 115 every day, but it's a dry heat.
