Sting was not subsidizing any of the players. The DA model will only work and attract the top talent if the pay-to-play is removed.

Worth the read! Decision was based on the input of the members of one of the top clubs in the country. A club that has produced tons more top players than our entire state. Interesting & detailed take on GDA.

The money will dry up sooner than later. In 2 years time there will be less than 20 teams. They are trying to make with work to keep the NWSL from folding up shop. Where else will the National Team players make their money.

I don't think Ecnl in Oregon can even come close to the actuality of this club. This club is a top level club and has produced many good players. They will regardless if they are in Ecnl or not.

The reality is that Oregon teams don't even come close to this level and probably never will. Their B teams would destroy oregons Ecnl teams.

What the actual premise of the article is about is control.

Clubs who have been around for a long time and established themselves through time and effort do NOT want to see some overlord entity come in and declare they are the top and the best along with mandating EVERYThING. Literally. Coaching staff requirements to get licenses that are us soccers money maker and have been a joke when considering quality of the coach.
Training schedules, game schedules, playing time requirements, and 50 other things.

Imagine if a government agency came in and said this is the way now...most people would tell them to F off. But because the way soccer works people assume us soccer is correct...when in all reality they have been behind the clubs themselves and struggling to keep up.

Ecnl is a great program for the top clubs in the country 1-25 but it's showing to be terrible for Oregon and the clubs are struggling to keep it afloat while keeping their reputations in tact.

The DA is a political nightmare full of the establishment networks that everyone hates.

Top ten club in the country. Well reasoned discussion. Very interesting.

DeAnza was another. SoCal is offering GDA as B team.

Those are all terrific clubs with the demographics and club infrastructure to produce elite level players. Neither of the local ECNL clubs are anywhere near the class of these teams mentioned above. They are at the opposite end of the spectrum in every way that you would compare them (demographics, population base, club infrastructure, coaching, local competition, etc).

The problem is that Portland will never be able to consistently produce top level talent spread across two ECNL clubs located only miles apart from one another. We just don't have the population or demographics to allow for this to happen. So, you get some average but mostly below average teams and players because the talent pool is spread too thin.

The GDA has it flaws but so does ECNL. The key difference is cost...and it is a major difference. The other clubs listed above are not financing their GDA participation the way the Thorns are. If they were, you would likely be hearing them sing a different tune.

Except Portland is not Texas and neither of the local ECNL clubs are anywhere close to the caliber of Sting.

This is like saying that OSU Beavers men's basketball is similar to Kentucky because they both play in D1 conferences.

No one is saying Portland is Texad or SoCal. The whole point of the story was to point out that a club should control is development and style of play and determine its rules for optimal player effectivenedd on and off the field. It has hack to do with 1 or 2 ECNL clubs in Oregon. It has everything to do with how FC snd CU can be different. That difference makes them unique and brings different types of players which every college is seeking. They dont want robots. They want individuals that are unique and soccer smart. So all 1 ECNL team in Oregon would do is limit the variety and types of players colleges want. Bad idea. GDA bad idea. Its attack of the clones vs the Jedi.

Not to mention that Thornz will never be able to follow the US Soccer guidelines for how to play the game. Impossible to take TA girls that have been raised on kick-and-chase bootball thugball and suddenly turn them into possession-oriented, heads-up, passing machines. Ain't gonna happen. That's why the Salem Superstar flamed out in ECNL after just one year.

Oh you fc Portland crazy..stop being mad that your team is terrible and you are getting scammed. Says a lot that you can't get over a player who saw the scam before you did and left even though she was getting it for free....

TA does a better job at possession then fc Portland. Fc Portland 4-4-2 kick it to you...

                              Answer us this:

Why would the DOC of THUSC abandon her only partner club Crossfire Oregon? (THUSC & Crossfire Oregon= Crossfire United) for a coaching position in the Portland Thorns new GDA program.

That's like two food cart vendors who decided to pool resources and make a double wide cart offering a menu of fast food with fine dining prices (Crossfire United). Then one of the owners decides to leave the double wide venture and joins on as a chef at Roe's.

                              Huh?
