    Travel 16 players x 6 trips x $500 per trip = $48,000.

The extra $10,000 is probably for coaches pay?
That is interesting but you don't have some costs on there. Balls, snacks, petro for the away trips, and sweatpants for coaches. If you are going to do the math you need all the variables.

It’s a pro track not a college track.

Quit dissing on the kids that play. They are just trying to have some fun.

Not everyone wants to go to college.
In four years the thorns academy has only gotten one player into college soccer? That can't be right.

Furthermore none of our local clubs will ever be top tier DA programs, since US Soccer will never grant them a seat at the older prolific DA ages.

Correction: As champions and the flagship team in the NWSL the thorns were selected by US Soccer to be inaugural members of the girls USDA. Again it's impossible for them to compete with an local club , just like the boys side of things no local Girls club will ever be chosen to be part of the GDA.

On both fronts the Timbers/Thorns don't compete with any local clubs they only harvest and attract the best of the best from the local clubs. That's not competition that's called a feeder system.

        2. Local clubs do pay for OYSA services that Peregrine provides on behalf of the OYSA (RTC/ODP/League/Cup). No connection to the MLS/NWSL academies)

OYSA asked for Peregrine's help, don't blame Peregrine blame the sorry OYSA it was their decision.

In the end confusion has set in when you are comparing pro academies with youth local non profit clubs, they both are here for sure are but two different animals serving different masters.

Sorry you didn't understand the differences.

Next week we talk about how the Blazers compare with CYO basketball in Tigard.
Drink much Timbers Kool-Aid lately? Haven't read so much BS in one post in a long time.

Perplexed who writes that stuff. Understand Mike S. and Erik L. try to justify their existence, beyond that it is weird.

              Reality is weird. I agree.

The $2,000 fee covers a good share of costs which is surprising.

Rising Timbers/Thorns ticket prices, inflated beer costs and hot dogs for $8 cover the Boys/Girls academies funding pretty well.

                  Lucky parents.

I am sure the extra $10,000 goes for coaching costs.

The thing to remember is there is no end game for girls academies. It's not like you are going to sell the rights to a player you developed. There was an article in the paper a while back that said the Thorns pro players had to take side jobs to supplement meager wages (as low as $7000 +/- per year). So it is not like there is any market for transfer fees.

Girls should probably be focused on college. ECNL put 40 girls into college last year. Thorns got 1 over four years. Even TA clubs have gotten a good number.

FC Portland put entire squads into D1 schools back in 1997, actual top flight colleges with relevant competitive D1 squads. They actually beat all the teams they faced for the most part. Funny how that works.

I thought that US Soccer prohibited charging a try out fee? Did they change that?

US Soccer did prohibit it. Thorns charged one anyway. Upstanding honest folks running that program.
