Maybe there is not ANY way of accurately ranking teams, but the GS points ranking system is actually quite thoughtful. The biggest obstacles in its effectiveness are twofold: a) ECNL games don't/won't use the system and b) the system doesn't limit how many games/tournaments a team can play(i.e points chasing). So it will never give an accurate depiction of ECNL teams. But for the teams that use the system, it's usually not that far off. Right now it's a big ol' mess because of the calendar year change and many teams are taking advantage of "inheriting" points and/or "burying" old bad results. But I suspect that tournament directors DO take GS points into account when they have to manage their flights.
There used to be another site that did a good job with the rankings. Somehow managed to capture matches outside the purview of gotsoccer as well. i bet this turned out to be an almost manual undertaking. for that reason and the age change the site was closed.

But gotsoccer is fine for most teams. ECNL for girls and academy for boys do not need to be ranked in the same system. you know they are better than the rest. They are also not likely to enter same tournament as the remainder of the teams.

OW people get it because they have the boys Academy. ECNL and Academy teams dont get GS points in their league. ECNL Teams might play one outside event annually.

Let's use u16 as our example. CFCU is the class of this age. They already have mutiple kids committed to D1. The current GS rankings has them at 3rd behind SCP and OW. They would blast both of those teams and I'm not sure that SCP would be able to get it out of their defensive third.

For u15 it's even worse. That team is loaded and has the best youth player in CT. They are ranked 12th behind soccer powerhouses Sporting and PSC Dynamo.

        It's a joke.
While no one would argue the ECNL league is much better, the OW 15 and 16s would give their CFC counterparts very good games based on tournament results. Both have done well in similar brackets at similar tournaments. The OW 15s just winning a much higher bracket at Jeff Cup and beating ECNL teams while doing it. The CFC 15s did not even place in a much lower bracket although missing their best player . OW16s had two wins in the same bracket as CFC at Jeff Cup, were the national NPL finalist and have beaten current NEFC/Breaker (current ECNL team), the last two times they played albeit based on the old age brackets.

With that said, CFC MUCH better at marketing their kids, hence the D1 commits at CFC. That is the biggest difference among the teams at the two clubs. Not much difference on the field most likely but they will end up in very different places in college. How much they play at the college they go to is another story all together.

Not quite that simple as just marketing their kids. College coaches view ECNL as a more competitive league than NPL, closer to the rate of college play. If two players were similar then the ECNL player would most likely get the nod over an NPL player. Yes coaches shop players, but the league does play some role in consideration.

Agree on the league but also cannot argue with CFC marketing/recruting machine (which is a compliment to them). However, FSA is in the same league and CFC players go to far better schools.

The point that the OW 01 and 02 teams are close to CFC from a competitive stand point seems valid based on the results, but CFC kids will go to much better schools than OW and FSA even though FSA plays in the same league. The OP that said CFC 01 and 02 teams are easily better than OW's similar age teams based on the 01s college placements is not making the correct argument.
