Barca Academy closes shop in Canada

The trend continues in the youth soccer world as 5 different locations in Canada for Barca Academy have closed down. Over 1,000 youth soccer players displaced and looking for new homes. Amazing what this COVID 19 virus has done. Worried about the landscape here locally hope it does not destroy what we’ve built.

Well, NJ Fire is open for business if any want to relocate down here.
Dynamite too. Hell, even PSA under DM might be a good options for some of these displaced Canadians.

This story is a BCN issue, the youth soccer business lincensee of FC Barcelona. The Barca locations are franchises selling youth soccer under the Barca name. BCN is a business that has declared bankruptcy. The soccer at these businesses is supposed to be at a level that FC Barcelona monitors, but that has always been subjective.

BCN the business either has been poorly run or manages cash poorly.
Youth sports is an unregulated billion dollar business.
With no public advocate its buyer beware.

Barca in Canada was a franchise and there the franchise holder is the one who went out of business. It was not a decision made by Barca itself.

The NY Barca Academy is owned by Barca itself. It very well may end up closing in the long run but somewhat less likely to do so because it wouldn't be an outside entity making the decision to do so.

Bottom line how much $$ are these academies making and how will they be able to stay in business through this crisis? More locally I worry about the long term viability of places like CSA, PDA Shore, Sportika etc...

I think that a lot of soccer clubs are in danger of folding during this crisis. Especially the ones that have fields to pay for.

The trend unfortunately continues as GPS Canada also closed down and fired all their staff. Rumours are the entire GPS brand may be in jeopardy with Mass being next. Hope this does not expand south to NJ....
