There are Regional and National Tournaments each year.

It is competitive but dont kid your self. Just because they have tournaments does not mean they are as good as even a low level D 3 school

Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of commitment with these college club teams because they actually had to cancel the spring 2014 because of low participation.

Is there something in between here that is more stable than this appears to be but less structured than playing a varsity sport?
Why don't you let us know what your son's schedule is and we will see what is available for him

So what? The whole point of club sports is to give players who, for whatever reason(s) chose not to make a full commitment to even a "low level" D3 program. If they are playing, having fun, continuing to love their sport - it's all good. They are not lesser people because they aren't playing at what you deem to be a "higher level"

The skill level runs the gamut.

But at the top end, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Some of the d1 teams are very, very good.

Players have six years of eligibility so grad students are allowed to play, some of which are very good foreign players and former d1 starters.
