Tournament Cancellations - a better way?

Okay, a bit of venting but why is it most soccer tournaments wait to cancel until minutes before the event with snowstorms that have started already or are known to be coming during the event. This Saturday with 3-8 inches forecast smack dab in the middle of this tournament -- we didn't get the call until 45 minutes before the first match that it was canceled. Most players had gotten there or were 15 minutes away. They had traveled in snow from 1-2 hours away to be there. So now we send them out into terrible driving conditions back home with a "sorry" no soccer today.

New Rule Suggestion, Final decisions on "play or don't play" must be communicated to all teams no later than one hour before the team traveling the furthest from the event would theoretically leave to be on time for their first match.

Other things these tourneys could do is survey teams/players on whether or not they would drive to event in forecast conditions - do a headcount before they announce to aid in the final decision to play or cancel.

Bottom line? There's got to be a better way to handle tourney cancellations then they do right now. Saturday night was a dangerous time to be on roadways for a tourney that never happened.

Others have been cancelled in advance only to have th weather turn out to be not that bad. By and large I think organizations do their best. If all the teams are local there's less need to call it early.

The reason is $$$. If they cancel too early, like the day before a forecasted snow storm, parents will ask about a refund. If they cancel right before kickoff, it gives the impression they tried everything they could to get the game in, it was out of their hands, and then no one asks about a refund. Tournament keeps the money.
The solution is fairly easy. Like most travel leagues, games are cancelled 2 hours before kickoff due to bad weather. For tournaments, that would probably require someone going out to the field first thing in the morning to inspect the fields. But then again, that costs money.

ANyone trying to do an event this time of year is a fool not have cancellation insurance. If they opt to go without it, then too bad if they have to give refunds. If they don't want that then tell teams they won't get their money back - and see how few sign up for the event

One option is try to reschedule if they can, then give refunds only to those who request it/can't make it. A small local one wouldn't be that hard; a big one probably wouldn't work. I think the Manhattan Classic which used to be early March has closed up shop because they had tow many years of bad luck. Except for this Saturday there's been so little snow and pretty moderate temps. Sometimes you're just unlucky.

Anybody running or entering into a tournament in the Northeast run the risk of a tournament being cancelled. What should happen like most of the real world does is buy insurance to cover the cost in case of cancellation. Parents should buy insurance on airfare and hotel rooms and the club on the tournament.

All that angst over an indoor "tournament"? So you stayed home and watched movies on Netflix with your 11 year old. Whah whah whah.
