    Region 1 ODP camp

Anyone have any experience with Region 1 ODP camp in PA? Have a son who will be attending this summer and just curious as to how it works...

    Region 1 ODP camp

    It's intense.

They narrow the potential R1 pool each day. Super competitive. I wouldn't get your kid's hopes up, just view it as a good 3 day experience in PA.

Your child gets put on a scramble team with kids from a variety of other states. He may or may not have someone from MA on his team. They usually have 3 training sessions a day with that team. For U13 and up, once or twice a day a new "pool" list is posted that pulls the players seen as being higher level into an ID group that train separately from the scramble teams. Kids get added and dropped continually as the camp goes along, ultimately ending up with a final regional pool that gets announced on the last day of camp. They stay in dorms with their state team and eat at the dining hall, walking back and forth to the fields with chaperones.

It is hard, emotionally and physically. Lots of soccer and lots of stress. If your child goes in with a good attitude, trying to make the most of it, but not necessarily expecting to make the final pool it can be a great experience.

Thanks. Super helpful. My child is a 2006 so just starting this process with ODP. Your advice on going in with a good attitude and lowered expectations make sense

Wait, TS demands this before another post "ODP is irrelevant today"
Ok, we got that taken care.

Gettysburg College is usually host location. Nice environment, Some long walks between dorms, cafe, field, - but that's good for them. This is not a fun-time camp. This is purely who-can-hack-it camp. My D called it Hunger Games, but loved it. As other posters said, lists are posted, and names fall off. The chosen play on a different field, some get sent down, others get called up. Tell him to pack his thick skin, and he'll have a great time

It's an ongoing assess and reassess of all participants. No parents allowed. Lists go up daily of the top players. Those top players then train together the next day. List changes daily and then twice a day. You are a number, not a name and state is not relevant. No team colors, no club colors and roster gets posted. Lots of work and my kid is hoping to go again this year.

ODP is a total waste of time, sorry to burst your little bubble.

ODP is a thin membraned shell of it's former self. 25% of the kids that use to show up. Top 30 to 50 kids in most states just aren't there. But please continue to believe the opposite

ODP is just like any other club. The biggest and best connected club in the US.
If you make the top team, it has value. MA ODP is not the top team. The R1 Pool, and Boca Roster has value.

The youngest year of the camp is much less stressful!!! There is no daily pool list for that year which changes the entire experience. A pool list is actually generated at the end of the camp for that age. Still, it is a good experience since it is a good warm up for the following years. After the first year, the camp is intense and the pressure is high. I would not say to lower your kids expectations just make sure they are realistic. They should know from their state ODP sessions where they stand in the group. If they are not in the very top of that group, they will not magically rise to the top at Regional camp. It is an identification platform. Most who want to pass judgement on this site either haven't experienced the program first hand, gave up after the first (easier) year or their kid didn't get identified so the bash the program. It has value to those few who get ID'd. If you are strictly looking for more touches on the ball take the money and spend it on a private coach.

I wonder if this still applies...
When I grew up, about half of the better players ended up still being the best in High School. All the factors, size, speed, peaking early, etc would change the hierarchy as kids aged.
                              Does this still happen?

A common theme I see on TS is that if your kid isn’t on a DA team that every other form of development is a waste of time and money. How would anybody know what potential a young player has unless they keep challenging themselves against the top players not in DA?
