GDA should have just merged with ECNL and kept the ECNL rules. The league footprint was already in place. All the GDA had to do was figure out a better way of how to find the talent in the league. Splitting the talent across the country was, and is, a joke in my opinion! Just look at how well the boys DA has worked out for them!

Keep DA but with ECNL format and rules
In other words just play ECNL,
One problem there in Tampa Bay though.TBU does not select the best soccer players.TBU selects returning players that show loyalty to the club and athletes NOT soccer players.
This method is clearly diluting the system and affecting US woman’s soccer at the end of the day.
I personally would rather see skilled, talented players on the slower side play alongside my daughters on ECNL instead of athletes that play kick ball, can’t pass to feet, can’t pass a weighted ball and just chase after the ball that consistently gets given away by their own team.

USSF wanted to call the shots. So rather than tweak what was already there (and ECNL does need to improvements) and do what was best for women's soccer, they had to create another new league, dividing talent, resources, coaching, and making it more complicated for college coaches. USSF is spending virtually nothing on it and there's no MLS support or really a pro path for women. The system barely works for boys and makes even less sense for girls. They'll create another super league in a few years when they see this is going nowhere

U.S. Soccer should be top dog. They never should have let U.S. Club Soccer almost take over with its ECNL. Do agree U.S. Soccer should came in with a different plan then basically reinventing ECNL and taking over clubs who had already established their lead by having access to playing in the ECNL. The only clubs who will survive are the ones granted DA or ECNL access. Not sure I agree with this system to identifying and developing talented players for the future national teams by really putting it in the hands of clubs who were granted DA or ECNL.

identifying and training talent should be completely out of the hands of clubs altogether. but there's plenty of club politics in bda and will be in gda as well. if it was completely 100% ussf it would have more credibility. but it's easier for ussf to show up at a club ask "who do you have?" soon enough they won't even take ecnl players just to send a message and make sure they are #1.

This may be the case, but is really flawed as there are definitely top level talents that don't have access to GDA due to geography and club distribution. Just look at the club map on the GDA website.

Naturally geography is an issue, is with the boys also. Yet USSF expends very little effort searching outside the DA system. A few MLS clubs are starting residency programs - that is what is needed to really expand the reach. But I doubt it will expand past a few clubs because of the high cost and little financial benefit the clubs get from it.

The discussion always comes back full circle about our pay to play DA system. Residential programs are expensive and most families can't afford to send their gifted soccer players off to residential soccer school.

Play DA, don't play DA. Your kids choice. If ECNL works better for you, stay there. It will remain a viable league for the foreseeable future.
I agree this article is suspect quoting girls saying "USSF made me skip high school soccer":
                      1) The club makes the decision to allow or disallow High School Soccer not USSF
                      2) The quotes are players from Real Colorado. A club that has BOTH ECNL and GDA.

Residential has to be paid for clubs and USSF, not families, like they do elsewhere in the world. There's little point in doing a residential program if it's pay to play.

In 2021 USSF also calls the shots on HS play. Clubs have to submit an application showing the player has extenuating circumstances and has to play HS for private school scholarships. Public HS is not allowed. So in 2021 most players hoping to do both will have to chose.

But private high school scholarships for athletics is not allowed and why would U.S. DA promote that?

The aren't allowed and yet they are, they're just called other things like need based aid or merit money. USSF knows that some kids get educational opportunities because of sports and that it would be unfair to take those opportunities away. Keep in mind waivers will generally only go to the studs. Clubs won't give waivers to bench warmers. Some clubs don't grant them no matter what, especially free-to-play MLS clubs.

To attend private schools it costs money and why should private school players get exceptions to the rules and get to play high school soccer. Not right to treat one group in a special way.
